Hell of Presidents: Bonus 2 - America Origins 2: Civil War
Added 2023-12-27 12:05:01 +0000 UTC
We're joined by Civil War historian Matt Karp to take a closer look at the, uh, Civil War. We discuss its causes, the course of the war, how it shaped the Republic, and, of course, do a "who are your guys" for Civil War generals.
This episode ends on such an inspiring note re: the defeat of slavery.
It makes me think of Israeli apartheid - something that feels “absolutely indelible, fully asserted itself as the permanent state of affairs” crushed by human effort.

I think this episode is a unique case, because they're using a professional historian whose specialty is the Civil War as the expert, rather than using books as they would when writing their own histories. Matt Karp is answering off the cuff, and he's probably learned his facts over the years from so many primary and secondary sources that he couldn't pin down just exactly where to point to as proof for his opinions. But it would still be nice to get his recommended reading! Especially for primary sources! And yes, for the rest of the episodes, they should post a bibliography somewhere.

As of this moment, 1/16/2024, the exact same number of people hearted Bonus 1 as hearted Bonus 2 (94 people).
I guess that makes a lot of sense, since they were released on the same day and have the same fanbase. But it's still kind of weirding me out. It'd be like if the percentage of men who say they only have sex with men and the percentage of men who consider themselves gay were both exactly 1.67%.

I know this carries zero weight, coming from a stranger, and not a beloved history influencer, but I recommend New Dark Age by James Bridle, for the month of our Lord 1/2024.

I'd love monthly book recommendations from Matt! I started reading Voltaire's Bastards because Matt mentioned it and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

God damn I miss Matt This Hardtac be Bangin Christman. You are perpetuated in each of us even now. I see the early emanations of legacy in each increasingly incomprehensible Sysiphous meme. True legacy is in all the nameless things that come after us connecting one to the other by a tether neither will ever know. Is that the shape of our souls? Be well mighty Uncle, mother Uncle, and baby Uncle. Mashalla.

Matt did a really early Inebriated Past epi on August Willich, a veteran of '48 who became a Union general

My favorite Guy is Franz Sigel, German '48 revolutionary expat who commanded all the unassimilated German brewers from St Louis all over southern Missouri. Look up the song 'i goes to fight mit Sigel'

Is there a list of books/sources used for this series posted anywhere? Would like to pick up a couple. Rise of American Democracy is explicitly mentioned, can't recall any others off the top of my head

something that should be pointed out wrt to the Army of Northern Virginia's invasions of the north is the opportunity to give Virginia farms a rest from the armies and time to bring in a harvest. In Pennsylvania in 1863, for example, the ANV stole just about anything they could get their hands on from livestock to farm tools to free African Americans. This is why that particular invasion is so limited in scope (Lee always stayed within sight of the Mountains and couldn't allow the Federal army to get between them and their line of retreat). It's tantamount to a giant raiding party.
There's a reason why Lee's wagon train back to Virginia is something like 40-50 miles long. Fed his Army for an entire summer and winter.

this is fine, but God help me are they ever wrong about George McClellan, and *especially* wrong about the Maryland Campaign.
The whole battle of Sharpsburg happens because McClellan moves *faster* than Lee believed he would! That's why his army is strung out all over the roads!
The order's drafted on September 9th (which makes it already pretty out of date when it's discovered in Frederick on the 13th) and by the 14th McClellan's driving Harvey Hill out of the South Mountain gaps.
