Come on guys, the Saxons are the English - Egbert, Ethelwulf, Athelstan Etc are all Saxons. Wessex means "West Saxon".

Yep, Eastern Emperor. At this time, Francia/Frankia (I've seen both) is split into three empires. West Francia, Middle Francia and East Francia, and later, Middle Francia was divided between West and East Francia. The East eventually turned into the Holy Roman Empire, while the West became France.
