Weekend Exclusive - How to be a Game Designer

Hello super special Patrons. I've got a new video coming out next week, but as I needed to upload it early to get feedback from industry experts, you might as well watch it super early!

This is quite a different episode - it's about how to actually get a job as a game designer. I spoke to loads of people (designers, educators, employers, recruiters) to build up a massive knowledge base. And then squeezed it into a 15 min video.

Hope you find it interesting, even if you're already in design or have absolutely no interest in becoming a game designer! I certainly enjoyed researching it.

Chat soon, pals

Mark

I work as a game designer on a browser/mobile F2P game. I started to work as a tester and then after one and a half year I moved to game design. Communication is really key in my job. Sometimes I feel almost as a manager. I make asset lists for artists, write documentation for programmers, resolve issues with QA and community managers. I come up with ideas about new things that can be put into our game and I have to balance monetization and fun all the time. I even write short stories for characters in our game. I have a lot of responsibilities and sometimes it's very stressful I love my job. Things I make are seen by tens of thousands people every day and it feels great, especially when I see that players like things that I helped to create.

Great work distilling a lot of advice. I get this question a lot, but since I started in the mid-90s things were radically different and much less competitive. I always say "start making games now. With a small team if possible." So we're on the same wavelength.
