[BOYS PLANET] STAR LEVEL TEST OVERVIEW

Comments

Hello , I was excited to watch the episodes with you but I thought it'd be free on patreon . Sadly it's not , are you ever going to make them free ? 😭

Sweet Princess

Such fun! We are going to be having a blast once the show concludes and we to marathon all these great groups!

Jessica Holyfield

Hopefully I’ll be able to look at it sooner rather than later!

Jessica Holyfield

I really want you to react to DKB's performance on The Real by Ateez in Peak Time. Please react to that. I hope you can react to the whole show Peak Time. This survival show is between underrated kpop groups and is a really nice survival show.

Pratiksha Majee

I don't know if you know but Mnet debuted a spin off group with 7 more trainees from Boys Planet as EVNNE- Park Han-bin Keita Lee Jeong-hyeon Yoo Seung-eon Mun Jung-hyun Park Ji-hoo Ji Yun-seo Jay, Yoon Jongwoo, Oh Seongmin, Yedam and Tag (he withdrew from Boys Planet) debuted in Onepact. Wumuti, Chen Kuan Jui and Haru from Boys planet debuted in XLOV with Hyun who is a 5-6 yr trainee as you know.

Pratiksha Majee

I'm happy we have full cams so we are able to see the performances not super manipulated but part of me likes getting to dive into the manipulation strategies of Mnet... Helps me not get too emotionally invested in their tricks!

Jessica Holyfield

Interesting that it wasn't on the playlist with all the full cams! I'm sad I missed it! I feel that all people deserve some screen time especially if they are going through all the troubles like the official members did!

Jessica Holyfield

it was fun to go back and watch these after a while, when the first episodes came out I went and checked out all of the full cams to get most of my first voting picks (since 9 felt like so few compared to the amount of trainees I really felt like I needed to find who's performances I enjoyed). One of my favorite vocalists from the show was actually in Lullaby which wasn't aired but I found from watching the auditions in full, I think you may have missed that one (fuully understandable, there were so many) but there are no zb1 members and they aren't featured much during the rest of the show either so it's not the most important audition to catch

Kait Gold

I've never actually seen the full cams, and some stages I hadn't seen anything of before. for some of them I'm actually glad they weren't shown, because some that were just not very good during their stage, ended up being some of my favorites/ones I was rooting for to at least get to the next stage... I do kind of wonder how that would have influenced my voting around that time (since I watched basically live and voted since the first episode). also it makes me notice how much worse MNET made some of the stages look than they really were. MNET is evil though, they really had their eyes on a few in the beginning. some that were higher ranked that MNET maybe didn't expect really didn't get much screen time, and some that did were just not very good in my opinion. you'll see all of the drama and evil editing though soon enough

Rochella Duijs

I wasn’t expecting to catch the xlov members AT ALL but here we are haha

Jessica Holyfield

thanks for the inside, I wasn't really into kpop during wanna one's time so I don't really know how was it for nu'est during and after produce. I mean, Victon got their first music shows wins after X1 debuted and later when Seungwoo rejoined the group, but the whole X1 situation is such a mess that it's difficult to relate it to anything. I just mentioned Victon as they also had their leader joining the show, and in some ways, I really think it benefited them as a whole. But yeah, we'll never know fully what it'd be like for Victon if X1 didn't disband and for Pentagon if Hui ended up debuting again.

Maya

hui's actually the lead dancer in ptg so it's a shame that he participated on the show when he was fresh out the military 😭 not dancing for 2 years really did a number on his movement quality, so right after the show he went to a CRAZY amount of workshops to get back into the rhythm of things. as for ptg... its complicated. the group was doing really well and their cb in 2022 was well received by critics too but cube just let their hype die out as per usual. 😭 most of the group left the company and there are talks of a comeback, but nothing confirmed yet.

hayun lee

goodness... they need to pull from anywhere.. BLESS IT ALL... It's still going to be fun none the less!

Jessica Holyfield

BOOOO..... Well we will still have a great time none the less!

Jessica Holyfield

haha gotcha!

Jessica Holyfield

Ah! Gotcha!

Jessica Holyfield

Oof what you said about Mnet controlling everything else is so true. No spoilers but certain contestants got eliminated during a stage and it made the public mad because Mnet purposely showed their performance in the 2nd week part 2 of the episode rather than part 1. And even though everyone liked their performance and wanted to up their ranks, there literally wasn't enough time to bump them past the elimination threshold.

Spencer Lily Sinclair

I think the only group to actually see a rise in popularity and success after members when on a survival show was Nu'est when they competed on Produce 101 Season 2. They were literally on the brink of disbandment before going on the show and by the time the show ended, all their old albums were rising in the charts and sold more copies than they did at release. They got their first music show win as a sub-unit (since Minhyun was part of Wanna One) and then as a full group 2 years later. And because of their resurgence they actually stayed together for another few years and saw decent success.

Secretninja312 (Tina)

Not to mention when they copy paste a "reaction" from one thing to another. Like when Doha (Blue House) performs, you see one of the mentors reacting negatively but right behind him, you see Doha in the seats.

Secretninja312 (Tina)

oh and mnet love to show reactions of someone just focusing on a performance or having a resting expression and caption it 'glaring' or some shit like that. i hate when they try to establish a narrative this way

Maya

Have to Add, you're definitely spot on on your comment about MNET controlling who they want in the group. After their whole vote rigging scandal with the Produce 101 series, they do seem to be more careful and transparent about the votes, constantly showing a disclaimer about votes being monitored by a 3rd party or something. But they definitely can sway viewer votes/opinions based on who they show and how they edit certain trainees. Hence why they're called MSnake and the "evil edits" so as viewers we have to always keep in mind that not everything we see is exactly what played out, especially when there's 90+ contestants involved and only 2 hour episodes, the producers will cut/paste what they want to show and create dramatic narratives they want to portray. That's for both the trainees and the mentors. I've seen so many people watch a survival show and then decide they hate a mentor because of what's shown, there are moments when you see like the dance mentors seem harsh and mean on the show, but when you see them on other shows, outside of competition, they're a conpletely different person. So yeah, producers definitely have control of how they show the footage they capture and the narratives they want.

Secretninja312 (Tina)

Now THAT is where the fun is haha

Jessica Holyfield

regarding Hui, yes, there was a lot of discussion regarding if he should be in Boys Planet, if it's fair etc. In Produce series (or produce adjacent bc BP is basically produce) there are always contestants from already debuted groups. Usually it's from groups that are struggling atm, they haven't had a comeback in a while, most members are in military etc. For Pentagon, i don't know how it was exactly, but they never had bigger success than during Shine era (2018). I know now that some members are no longer under Cube, there's a member in a military and there are also two foreign members that are not in Korea as of right now. Pentagon as a group have been quiet since 2023. In my opinion everyone should get a chance even if they're already in a group, even if you already have a name in the industry. We don't know what would have happened if Hui debuted again in ZB1. The closest comparison we have (and it's not even a good one) is X1 and Produce X 101 (and we know what happened there,,,eh mnet, why did you have to be horrible as always). In Produce X 101 we had Han Seungwoo, a leader of Victon, who later debuted in X1. After X1, I'd say that Victon had few of their most successful comebacks. Because before produce, things have been pretty quiet for them as well. Of course, the situation was unique because X1 was short lived and we never saw their full potential and what would happen to Victon and how successful they'd be after that, but yeah.... I don't think it's fair for us to say to somebody: 'You already had your chance, if you don't like what's going on in your current group you should just suck it up, retire, disband, go back to being a trainee somewhere else and maybe then debut'.

Maya

To answer your Pentagon question. All members left CUBE expect for Jinho and Hui BUT everyone is still part of the group. They didn't disband / are still under cube as a group, but everyone is kinda doing their own thing right now + one member id doing his military service.

ashe

Yay! I'm so excited to rewatch all these performances again and with you. It's interesting to see who has since debuted, like YueHua G-Group and K-group have all debuted in some capacity. Also, I believe it was revealed by Ollie at some point that YueHua G-group has their song changed right before the show. I think they were supposed to do NCT Dream's Beatbox or some other NCT song, but they wanted to do the whole K vs G rivalry storyline, so they had G-group switch to NCT127's "Kick It" so both YueHua groups are doing the same song. And yes, YueHua is one of the larger companies. They're also a company who's trainees tend to do very well on survival shows both in China and Korea. I remember at one point around 2018-2019 where they had like 10 idols in 6 survival show project groups. They are a chinese based company and are much bigger in China than Korea. From what I've seen, they do seem to train a lot of their trainees in Korea, even the idols they end up debuting in China. The group that did Pentagon's Shine, I believe this is another group that had issues where they had 6 members but 3 didn't perform during the star level test (my guess is they were probably sick or had covid) because if you watch the dance practice of the performance, theres 6 members not 3. So I think the 3 had to quickly regroup and redistribute parts last minute, hence the shaky performance. But they never addressed this in the actual episode. I think we were spoiled by Universe Leagues auditions where they were all pretty good that I forgot how "bad" some of these MNET ones were. MNET does often like to throw in already debuted idols and trainees who have zero training in to the mix of contestants. I think it's just to see what happens and to change things up. Because debuted idols have knowledge of the tough industry that they often can share with the other trainees. While the guys with no training, they're the ones the viewers can relate to the most and it's fun to see them grow throughout the show. Plus everyone loves a good underdog story. With that in mind, the guys that performed "My house" are pretty iconic and very likeable. Both I believe are actors and didn't train to be idols before the show. They're known as "Red House" and "Blue House" throughout the show Sidenote: love the Mr Nicknames you give the trainees lol 2:11:24 yes he's currently in a group along with a bunch of other guys from this show (You'll find out eventually lol). EVNNE 2:33:49 funfact, these guys Joohyung from Universe League (Groove Team) are in the same group Nine.i. Winnie from the Thailand duo (they performed kokobop) was also from this group but he left after appearing on boys planet due to shoulder injury.

Secretninja312 (Tina)

It's so interesting to rewatch, knowing that many of the participants have already debuted or are in pre-debut and to see how they've all grown both professionally and in terms of age, lol Haru was my number one pick. He was 17 at the time of the show, no company represented him, he was just a guy who came from Japan without much training to become a star. I looked at him and thought, closer to 30 he'll give us (* ̄ii ̄). And now he's debuted in XLOV and seems to be going to give us hell much earlier)))

OrOrO

GBTB is one of the songs I almost requested lol. They are the sunbaes to the group that covered them. (My ZB1 bias gunwook was in that group.) Can't wait to see your reaction of the episode. (Jellyfish) Jay park DID have a choreo. That was done with 1million back in the day and there is a pretty epic performance video with the oooold 1mill squad. You got the xlov kid! Hanbin IS the leader. It is a mix of ONF and Hanbin. Most of it is ONF other than the arm control sections. That is NOT ONFs forte haha. Waacking was after the performance. The second yuehua group (the k members) I never noticed how Gyuvins mic pack was flying around the whole time but still held on. It's a Lil soldier 🫡 all of them debuted between evnne and zb1. You've had a good eye for talent/top finalists honestly lol. Keita was a fave. Taerae's group had a bunch of evnne members that were just shy of debuting in zb1. They all did pretty well. Lol you missed jiwoong gyuvin gunwook and hao. Damn near half of zb1 is from yuehua lol. Lol you got 2 of 3 xlov members from this show. Im impressed honestly

It's kind of hilarious that it becomes increasingly obvious who mnet is also trying to eliminate and that they get more and more frustrated that it just doesn't work in certain cases 😂

BaoziBang (Tali)

He picked Lay because he belongs to him 😂

BaoziBang (Tali)

It's not even on purpose and I don't know where it's from but it's a bit uncanny valley for me?

BaoziBang (Tali)

Watching all these showed me again that I can excuse unstable Vocals and mistakes while Dancing but I cringe automatically when people try to do a concept they are really not comfortable with and can't hide it.

BaoziBang (Tali)

Hanbin is in one of the Labels that belong to Ravi from Vixx

BaoziBang (Tali)

I’m already preparing myself… luckily I get to have fun in other ways and we know some contestants are having successful careers post show so it’s a bit more bearable for now!

Jessica Holyfield

Still watching but your comments about how if Mnet can’t control who goes in the group they will control who is shown on the show is very true…we all know what Mnet is like. I don’t want to give anything away but it becomes obvious who Mnet want in the group, and who they don’t
