I'm just binging watching this though my self isolation

Hazel Malone

omg this is the best reaction ever lol, i can't stop laughing haha

Hazel Malone

I totally get why he was laughing. To me this episode is definitely written as a piece of satire and the most brilliant thing was watching Failwhale's reaction in contrast the reaction of the people watching the PM on their TV screens. It was almost a mirror image. He started by laughing... then instantly went serious - exactly like they did. The ridiculousness of the situation in itself is funny, even if the peril of the princess and the subject matter is very very dark. I think this is a superb episode of TV (as are many of the episodes). So pleased to see you doing these!

Mark Ward

Wow. I thought it was because it's a dark mirror of real life.

Martin Wiggan

'well, that's black mirror for you - each episode leaves you completely crushed and devastated and depressed' ... but in a good way

Dani C

Okay That does make sense

Aaron Wilson

It's uncomfortably funny in places. I think that's the intention. But at the same time deeply affecting in places, because of how seriously they take it. Brooker specifically chose a farcical scenario and then followed it in all seriousness to its logical conclusion

Dani C

I don’t really understand why he laughed the whole time. Like real question, is this supposed to be a dark comedy and I just didn’t find it funny or?😂

Aaron Wilson

The shit you can get away with on Channel 4 has always been awesome

Dani C

Writers' room? Nope. Just Charlie Brooker. Writers' rooms are getting to be more of a thing here, but most smaller scale series have 1 or 2 writers.

Dani C

FYI a number of episodes have post/mid credit scenes, so don't stop it the second the director's name appears on screen, you can probably judge it by the time remaining anyway. But they never do 'next times', so there's zero chance of spoilers for what's to come anyway.

When Black Mirror started, it wasn't a Netflix show. It was aired on the UK's Channel 4 for the first two seasons (hence 'End of Part One etc). Those seasons eventually ran on Netflix and performed so well that Netflix poached the show from Channel 4.

I remember Charlie Brooker when he wrote video game reviews in the early 90s :P Used to look forward to his reviews.

And then four years later this headline appeared - https://www.independent.ie/world-news/europe/david-cameron-put-private-part-in-dead-pigs-mouth-while-an-oxford-student-book-claims-31544450.html

i know, right? it was the ultimate risky move to put this episode as the pilot of the whole show, becasuse the other episodes are fantastic imo, but so many people i know were discouraged after this one and stopped watching

well, that's black mirror for you - each episode leaves you completely crushed and devastated and depressed. basically the show's idea is to present technology that's pretty close to what we already have now, and explore the most insane ways it can be dangerous (in this case the fact that EVERYONE was glued to the screens, and also how any type of news spreads through the internet like wildfire). p.s. the "black mirror" is your laptop or phone or tv screen in which you can see your reflection during the opening credits. oh and p.p.s. keep watching even after end credits - some (not all) episodes have after credits scenes at the end

As opening episodes go, this was a bloody brave outing.

Dani C

This was my first time watching Black Mirror. I’m assuming the title is a reference to the Biblical phrase “through a glass, darkly” meaning a mirror that distorts what it reflects. I thought the episode was brilliantly conceived. I was riveted. My only question is where were the people who refused to watch? There had to be some. Weren’t we as the TV audience just like those people in the pubs watching the grotesque story unfold to see if the Prime Minster would go through with the demands?

Tumbili

It's called Black Mirror because it deals with technology and how it is used/misused - if you look at any modern piece of technology, such as a monitor or smart phone screen, you see a Black Mirror

Chris

About for years after this aired, "Piggate" broke. PM at the time had an alleged encounter with a pig at college. Black Mirror was heavily referenced and it was the most fun I've had on Twitter. 🙂 https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/sep/21/david-cameron-piers-gaveston-society-what-we-know-oxford-secret

Mr K

Hell yes.
