It's clear that Askeladd is playing 4D chess here, setting up the fake assassination and hoping for King Sweyn to find out it was him. Meanwhile, watching Leif realize what Thorfinn has become couldn't have been more saddening, just as Bjorn's exit from the show was.

Bit late but Karlsefni directly translated from Icelandic is "Man Material". But the real translation would be something like "A tough man".
