"But it seems it wasn't the case after all."
To explain why, he must first confess something else.
Yuder's fingers tightened slightly around the glass of milk as he opened his mouth to speak. "...Actually, when I first 'returned' here, I had forgotten a considerable amount of what had happened in the previous game that I've been telling you about. At first, I thought it wasn't that important, so I forgot about it..."
He had thought it wasn't a problem because it didn't interfere with his life and there was no inconvenience in using his abilities and acting as the Commander of the Cavalry. The past was always a shameful scandal and a red label for Yudrain Aile, and it was more comfortable not to remember it.
How important could one person be whom he had only met for less than two years in his life? Rather than worrying about that, it was much more useful to dig into the memories of the disaster that he had failed to solve. He thought Kishiar was just someone who had to stay alive to avoid going down the same path as in his previous life.
How long did it take him to realize that wasn't the case?
"From a certain day, memories that I didn't know or thought I had forgotten started to appear abruptly through dreams after coming here. It took a considerable amount of time to acknowledge that they weren't just simple nightmares or dreams without substance, but things that had really happened and facts that I didn't know."
"..."
"Most of those dreams... were focused on the conversation we had on the last day when I killed you in the previous game."
Yuder spoke clearly without averting his eyes. When he first said that he had killed Kishiar, it felt so difficult, but now he could say it with a much calmer heart.
It was probably because the man in front of him and the hand in the white glove had changed Yuder to be able to do so.
"When I first returned here, I thought that I hadn't had any conversation on that last day and had simply finished what I had to do and escaped. When something I couldn't remember appeared in a dream in such a situation, I was confused for quite a long time about how much to believe in a situation where there was no evidence left."
That he had a conversation with his assassination target. Not just a word or two, but a considerably long one, and the topic wasn't light at all. How much could he be sure that it wasn't a delusion his mind had made up on its own?
If they had really had a conversation, why did they have it, and if he had forgotten, why did he forget? The Yuder at that time couldn't make any hasty assumptions. In a situation where time had been turned back and he had returned, there was no evidence left, so he was just confused.
Even after he had learned secret information about Kishiar's vessel and acknowledged to some extent that what he had seen in his dreams seemed to be real, Yuder had been doubting until recently whether some parts were really reality.
One of them was the part he was about to talk about now.
"Now, I act based on the belief that all the dreams I had were things that really happened. The part about the 'connection' that I'm going to tell you about is also something I learned from that dream."
Yuder's eyes darkened. He looked back on the past more carefully than ever before.
He didn't know what Kishiar had done while staying in Peletta after leaving the Cavalry in his previous life. However, in the memory that Yuder had long forgotten, he said this at the last moment:
'The inexplicable connection I made with you. Do you remember? What was connected that day was perhaps something deeper than our bodies... something that could be called a soul.'
His words, after a long search for what to do to sever something invisible, concluded that he could achieve the best results with his own power.
Yuder was perplexed. He couldn't understand why he was saying such things only now, just before the last moment.
But the man just smiled with a tired face and tried to do something without hesitation.
'It will be over soon. Pushing out all the connections until they are forcibly severed... and then…'
"...That is your last statement that I have remembered through dreams so far. I wanted to recall it in more detail, but I've never had a dream that showed the content after that."
The man who had been listening to Yuder's words without missing a single one opened his lips that had been silent.
"So, at the last moment, you mentioned the promise to resolve that 'connection,' and through the act of 'pushing it away.'"
"Yes."
The red eyes, lost in thought, stared at the glass of milk he was holding. Even Yuder couldn't guess what he was thinking now.
"Is there any connection between hearing that statement in a dream and the advice you gave me about my power?"
The first question he finally asked seemed to be looking at a considerably different point from Yuder's words at first glance. However, as Kishiar had often done so far, Yuder answered without being flustered.
"Yes. There is a connection."
The Yuder in his previous life didn't know well what kind of ability Kishiar had. He even mistakenly guessed that his ability as an Awakener would be of a completely different type.
"Until I had that dream, I had guessed that your ability could only affect visible things. After having the dream, I started to think that my thoughts might not have been true. If it's true that you mentioned severing the connection by pushing it out, it would mean that you can use your power on something else that is invisible."
"Yes. That's right."
And the current Kishiar proved at once that Yuder's thoughts were correct. Until then, the power that had been used like an ability to help with physical techniques by pushing and pulling only the enemies he could see and confront with his eyes began to develop with tremendous possibilities in an instant.
As a result, although Kishiar himself didn't know because he couldn't see it, they learned that even the vessel inside him could be maintained by pulling it with his original ability, leading to saving Emperor Keilusa. Not only that, but in the recent battles in the south, his power played an indispensable role in achieving miraculous victories. It was a feat that could never have been achieved if he had only used it in the original way.
Thinking like that, the successes achieved in this life were all connected to one point, so to speak.
"If what I heard in that dream is true, you at that time tried to sever the connection once by using your power, or you might have severed it. But..."
"It probably wasn't a perfect success. The evidence is that the connection between us hasn't been severed and remains here, and it's even increasing."
"..."
Yuder silently nodded.
The two of them simultaneously looked at the golden threads floating between them. Yuder could tell without exchanging words that they were recalling the moment when they first recognized those threads. The 'connection' that existed clearly between them, thin and precarious as if it would break at any moment, but never breaking.
After a long silence, Yuder opened his mouth again.
"This is all I know about the connection. I might remember something I forgot in the future, but for now, that's it."
"Hmm... Can I ask you one thing?"
"Please feel free to speak."
"In the previous game, it seems undeniable that both of you thought the connection should be severed. But then, what about now?"
A small breath echoed from under the golden hair resting on Yuder's shoulder.
"Even now, if it's possible, do you think it would be better without it?"
Yuder recalled the thread that was initially just a single, very thin strand. At that time, it looked precarious as if it would break at any moment, and at best, it only helped them recognize where each other was with difficulty.
However, as those threads increased and became more brilliant, more things began to be shared and exchanged between them. They became able to give and receive different emotions from before and read them, and they could also combine their powers and use their abilities using that connection.
Whenever he saw what they now called an imprint, Yuder felt a deep sense of stability. He also wanted to gaze at its dazzling beauty for a long time if possible. Just like when he looked at the man leaning on his shoulder.
Yuder slowly shook his head.
"No. I don't think so now. Not at all."
Kishiar, who had been quiet, finally let out a laugh. It was a slightly strange laugh that seemed both painful and not, but the arm embracing Yuder was indescribably warm.
"...I see. I'm glad. Because I feel the same way."
The man who lightly lifted his head kissed him. After a brief silence rose and fell, Yuder took a deep breath and continued.
"Now that you know this much, I should also tell you about the dream I had before going out to the sea."
Comments
I love that imagery of their connection getting stronger with increasing numbers of glowing gold threads! I love that Yuder has come so far that he could say all this and really look at that connection to their past. This scene is such a lovely interlude after the intense sea battle and I’m glad they’re going to talk about white gloves!
