The Cavalry headquarters that they returned to was quieter than usual.
It was natural since more than half of the members were absent to enjoy their vacation. However, the quietness was limited to the spaces where work was carried out. On the contrary, there were places that became more lively and noisy than before. That place was none other than the training ground.
Yuder walked alone towards the training ground, where boisterous voices could be heard. The reason he was alone was, firstly, because he had to wait while Kishiar joined Nathan Zuckerman and gathered additional luggage, and secondly, because Lusan, the recipient of the letter Enon had handed over before coming here, was there.
"Priest Lusan."
Lusan, who was busily preparing treatment supplies inside a tent near the entrance of the training ground, looked up.
"Oh! Sir Yuder. You said you were going somewhere briefly with Sir Enon, but you're back already? But... where is Sir Enon?"
He habitually looked behind Yuder's back and made a puzzled expression, seemingly surprised by the fact that Enon was not there.
"Enon said something came up at the destination, so he might stay a few more days before returning. Instead, here's a letter he asked me to deliver."
"What could have happened that he's staying for a few days... No, a letter? For me?"
Lusan received the letter with a face that doubted if it was really meant for him. Yuder didn't know what Enon had written in the letter, but he must have anticipated a situation like this and written it appropriately, because after reading it all, Lusan regained his usual bright expression.
"Thank you for delivering it, Sir Yuder. Sir Enon says I'm in charge of the medical unit until he returns, so I should do as I please. Haha. But you didn't come here just to see me, right?"
Lusan's gaze, filled with laughter, turned towards the training ground. Yuder nodded with a faint smile.
"I did come to check who's at the training ground."
"The new members are the most numerous. Some from other branches arrived a little this morning, and those who escorted them and the members who stayed here all came out to check their condition."
"I see."
It was as Lusan said. Among the members who were all tense for their own reasons, there were familiar and unfamiliar faces mixed together. Yuder found the particularly large Elpkins and felt a slight impression. He was answering the questions of senior members stiffly like a wooden doll while moving the same side arms, legs, and wings simultaneously.
'As expected, the southern side arrived first. Well, they would have left almost immediately after sorting things out after we left.'
Beside him, there were also a few new members who had once belonged to the Star of Nagran. They were all tense for their own reasons, so they didn't notice who had come here. As Yuder silently watched them for a moment, Lusan subtly asked.
"If there's someone you'd like to call out separately, shall I call them for you?"
"No. Officially, I'm on vacation right now... and if I go, I think the atmosphere will be broken. It's fine. I'll meet them anyway when I come back after taking care of my business."
"I see. You thought well. Sir Yuder, you should rest properly when you rest."
Yuder didn’t know about Enon, but he didn't expect Lusan to say such a thing. He stared blankly at the young priest who clenched his fists and opened his mouth.
"But Priest, aren't you also deliberately refusing rewards and working here without even enjoying a vacation? Perhaps you're the one who should rest."
"What? No. I'm someone who plays and rests well behind Sir Enon's back. I'm different from you, Sir Yuder! Besides, when new people come to help, I'll have more leeway."
Lusan firmly shook his head and refuted.
"And as I think I told the Commander before, it's too embarrassing to receive a reward for just doing what a person serving God should do. I'm happy now. But Sir Yuder, even if you feel fine now, I hope you take some time to rest."
What could he say when he put it like that? When Yuder sighed softly and answered that he understood, Lusan smiled as if he had won.
"Ah. But I heard from the members that the northern branch might be a bit late. They said they received a message that they ended up helping a village where a monster appeared on the way."
"Is that so?"
"I was curious about the new members from the north since I couldn't see them when I was dispatched to the south, but hearing that they're already helping people in danger on their way here makes me think, 'As expected of the Cavalry.' I hope they come without anyone getting seriously injured."
'The person in charge of the northern branch... was it Phieny Moffle?'
Phieny, who had the ability to shoot arrows of wind, represented the northern branch when the incident occurred in the south this time and played a big role against the huge waves. She had returned to the branch earlier than the members heading to the capital, and to think she encountered such an incident while leading the new members back.
'I was also curious about the new members from the north, but at this rate, it seems I'll only see them after visiting all the places I have to go.'
Unlike other branches, he couldn't directly observe when selecting new members for the northern branch. However, he wasn't very worried since the northern branch was located right next to Peletta. He had a strong belief that Kishiar's people, who were scattered throughout the area, would filter them out well.
Later, when coming for the dispatch to the south, Phieny filled all the dispatched personnel with 1st-term members. The reason was that among the new members who applied to the northern branch, there were no outstanding talents like in other branches.
'For other branches, Kishiar and I could preview and give a hint to pick out the new members worth bringing... but not for the north.'
Instead of taking a risk by trusting her own eye for people, Phieny chose to be cautious. After the incident in the south was over, she left a remark that she should have brought a few, but Yuder thought it better to avoid unnecessary risk than to regret the original decision.
'Still, I wanted to see them around this time... It can't be helped. I can only look forward to later.'
"Since Phieny is in charge, there’s no need for excessive worry."
"Right? Haha."
While talking with Lusan and quietly observing those in the training ground, it wasn't long before Kishiar and Nathan Zuckerman appeared from afar. Yuder turned around, saying goodbye to Lusan for now.
Kishiar, who met him, glanced at the training ground and smiled with his eyes.
"You went to deliver the pharmacist's letter to Priest Lusan."
"Yes. I also took a brief look at how many new members had arrived. I heard the north will be late due to an incident, did you hear about it?"
"I read the report letter as soon as I arrived."
Kishiar told him about the incident in more detail than Lusan.
"Fortunately, there were only a couple of minor injuries, and the matter was resolved well. However, the only bridge in the village that suffered damage from the monster's appearance collapsed, so their arrival is delayed because they're repairing it."
"I see."
"The situation is explained here, so it would be good to see it for yourself."
Yuder scanned the small letter Kishiar took out from his bosom. The handwriting of the report letter written in the code used by the Cavalry was indeed Phieny Moffle's.
Phieny apologized, saying that she couldn't leave without fixing the bridge that collapsed due to an explosion during the battle, and then wrote in detail the names of the members accompanying her and their merits.
As Yuder read those names absentmindedly, he suddenly stopped his gaze at one place.
'Fay – Although a newcomer, Fay calmly assisted other members well. After the monster appeared, it was all thanks to Fay that the frightened villagers were calmed and information was obtained.'
Fay. Fayra. He knew it was a fairly common name among northern commoners, but he couldn't help but notice that name. Because…
"..."
"Is there anything strange?"
Kishiar asked, seeming to have noticed that Yuder was staring intently at a particular part. Yuder took his eyes off there and opened his mouth.
"Hmm... There was a name among the new members that caught my attention, so I was looking at it for a moment."
"Someone you know?"
"It could be... or it might not be. It's a common name."
However, there was only one Cavalry member with that name that Yuder remembered.
That person was also from the north, started as a member in the northern branch, came to the capital, and later caught Yuder's eye and was promoted to the Deputy Commander of Sul.
And on the day Yuder was executed, that person stood next to the Emperor's throne, holding his staff.
'...The person from my previous life must have joined at least 3-4 years later.'
However, Yuder had already seen the case of Gloe joining earlier than he remembered. There was no reason why it couldn't be the same for Fay.
Kishiar, who examined Yuder's expression, smiled as if nothing was wrong and leaned closer. He gently took the letter back from Yuder's hand, whispering so that only the two of them could hear.
"I’m not sure who it might be, but from your expression, it doesn’t seem like you have fond memories of this person. By the time the members of the northern branch arrive in the capital, Kanna Wand will have returned from vacation. Who can escape the eyes of the Deputy Commander of Jung with just one letter? Don't worry."
"...Yes."
Yuder nodded and let out a deep breath.
Comments
I have a feeling that Fay is probably a redeemable character, after all, they haven't been said to have done anything explicitly wrong in the previous game. Plus, there was definitely some bias. Yuder must have felt especially negatively towards the person holding HIS staff and replacing HIS position.

And with Kanna, who is very much a new factor in this life, as well as all of Yuder’s friends and, most especially, Kishiar, I can’t imagine this person would be able to backstab him. Kishiar would go into even more of a protective mode when he finds out who this person was in the previous game.
