Turning Chapter 1090

Chapter 1090

"That guy Fay's ability was a bit peculiar. How should I put it... He used a power like a mirror."

"Ah, you mean the guy who creates clones?"

"Yeah. That guy."

"I remember him too. During the first exam, someone identical to Isias appeared in front of Isias and suddenly used an ability, so I was startled and almost fell over."

Yuder thought while looking at the faces of the members conversing.

'As expected, it seems to be the guy I know.'

The one who was called Fay Faillan in his previous life after being granted the surname 'Faillan'.

Yuder's first memory of Fay was as a new recruit who had moved to the capital from the Northern Branch after being recognized for the uniqueness and development potential of his ability.

He could create clones of a person using a part of their body, such as hair or nails. The clone could use the power of the original person and would say a few words as instructed by Fay. As the Northern Branch members said, he created clones that looked exactly the same as if reflected in a mirror.

Hearing it like this, it may sound like a tremendous ability, but in fact, in his previous life, he was treated as quite a burden for several years. The reason was that the duration of that ability was so short that it only lasted a few seconds, and he couldn't use the ability if he didn't obtain a part of the body of the person he wanted to create a clone of. In addition, there was also the disadvantage that the stronger or more complex the original ability was, the more difficult it was to create a clone and even more difficult to make them use their power. In a word, it meant that he couldn't even create a clone of someone like Yudrain.

'Moreover, he couldn't even create a clone of himself, so he was even more of a burden.'

Still, after rolling around in the Cavalry for a few years, Fay gradually began to develop. The new recruit who used to be so scared during training that he couldn't even look Yudrain properly in the eye started meeting his gaze head-on at some point, and one day, he finally created a clone of Yuder and achieved the tremendous feat of confusing the enemy. Of course, the clone of Yuder that Fay created only existed for about 1 second and appeared and disappeared in front of the enemies without being able to use an ability even once, but that gap was more than enough for the real Yuder to cut the enemies' throats.

When Fay became able to maintain Yuder's clone for about 10 seconds, he became the Deputy Commander of Sul. After becoming the Deputy Commander, he could freely create clones of most Cavalry members and use their abilities as he pleased. Of course, the duration was still short, so there were limitations in utilization, but the number of people who considered his ability mysterious was countless.

Thus, the nickname given to him was 'One-Man Cavalry'. It contained the meaning of praise that even with him alone, it was no different from having the entire Cavalry.

What Fay was particularly confident in was creating clones of awakeners who dealt with attributes, and Yuder guessed that it was probably because he studied and worked hard every day to create a clone of himself who dealt with nature.

'In the sense that using others' abilities is his own ability, in a way, it can be seen as an ability of a similar type to that fake sage Diemon bastard.'

Fay remained in the position of Deputy Commander of Sul until Yuder died. And of course, he didn't believe a single word of Yuder who had been wandering around trying to find traces of anomalous cracks and prevent the world from being destroyed. Not only that, but at one point, he even gave this advice.

'The failure rate of the Cavalry's missions keeps rising, and many members are dying. Even the Deputy Commander of Jung has died, but you keep clinging to that meaningless investigation. Do you think everyone will keep their mouths shut forever like the Deputy Commander of Shin?...'

The sharp words from him who rarely spoke to Yuder except for official conversations because he found him difficult.

That was their last conversation.

Right after that conversation, Yuder left the Cavalry again and tried to find information about the continuing disasters. So the next time he met Fay was on the day Yuder was executed, when he saw him standing next to the empty throne holding a red magic stone staff.

He couldn't remember well now what the face of the one who had been standing holding the staff, which was the symbol of the Cavalry Commander, or more precisely, Yuder, looked like. Because after the vivid anger of having his own thing taken away by someone else, who was also his subordinate, flared up and subsided, he had completely lost interest in Fay.

While Yuder was recalling his memories of Fay, the Northern Branch members continued their explanation.

"His personality was quiet. He didn't talk much. Sir Welliven said that guy seemed to be very timid, and Sir Shusainer said that although he puts up walls with people, he doesn't seem to be fundamentally bad."

"Ah, but I did see him talking enthusiastically once. When the Cavalry was mentioned."

Yuder frowned at the unexpected words and opened his mouth.

"What do you mean by that? Tell me in more detail."

"Haha, are you curious about that?"

Those who exchanged meaningful glances laughed and answered.

"New recruits generally have a great aspect of admiring the 1st batch members, but that guy Fay was a bit noticeable in that regard. He would light up his eyes and keep asking questions whenever the Commander's name and your name came up."

"...The Commander and me?"

"Yeah. He said he had greatly respected the Commander for a long time. Since he's from the North, well... it may seem natural, but it was a bit surprising that he could recite your achievements one after another."

"He said he wanted to see the Commander as soon as possible, so he must have been quite frustrated that he missed him and went to the capital without seeing him."

"Hey. Don't talk about someone like a suspicious pervert. Anyway! What we're saying is that we felt he had some... unexpectedly passionate aspects like that."

Isias intervened, hitting the backs of the other members who were grinning. It seemed like she thought Yuder, who was silently frowning, was in a bad mood.

However, the reason Yuder was frowning was not because of that. He was currently feeling the gap between the Fay he knew and the Fay he was hearing about now.

'That guy Fay said he had respected Kishiar for a long time? I've never heard anything like that in my previous life.'

He had thought that since he was from the North, he might know about the existence of the man who was once the Duke of Peletta and also the Cavalry Commander. However, Fay had never talked about the Duke of Peletta in private, not even once.

'...Was this also a memory related to Kishiar that was erased from me? It shouldn't be.'

"Ah! Come to think of it, there was one more thing Sir Welliven said about that guy Fay."

"What is it? I thought what I knew was all up to what I said earlier, but there was more?"

"It's nothing much. After Fay was selected, he looked at the family relationship and hometown village written on the application form again, and he said it was a place he knew. What did he say? Something like it reminded him of Sir Zuckerman's childhood....? And then he said it was no wonder he was timid."

"What's that about?"

"I told you it was nothing much. It seemed like Fay's hometown village was a bit of a remote place. I thought he meant that guy was timid because he lived in a place with few people."

"Don't tell Yuder every unnecessary thing. You should summarize and convey only what's necessary."

No. What helped Yuder the most was those words just now.

'Nathan Zuckerman's childhood. Remote hometown. A remark that he's timid... I feel like I know something.'

Yuder roughly responded to the members who were still enthusiastically chattering about other new recruits and left his seat. Naturally, the one he went to find was Welliven.

He was always at the Knights' headquarters near Peletta Castle, and as soon as he saw Yuder, he got up in surprise.

"Oh. What brings such an esteemed guest here...?"

"I wanted to ask if you happen to remember a person named Fay among the new recruits who joined the Northern Branch this time."

Welliven blinked his eyes in confusion. Yuder could tell from his eyes that he did remember Fay.

"I do remember, but... what exactly do you want to ask?"

"I'll be straightforward."

Yuder stared straight into the eyes of the Knight Commander, who was still as fierce as a tiger despite his age, and asked.

"Was that person named Fay perhaps of southern descent?"

Yes. This was what Yuder had deduced by combining the words he had obtained from what Welliven had supposedly said.

Nathan Zuckerman was born to southern parents and spent his childhood in a village where southern prisoners of war were isolated. If he hadn't met Kishiar, who had come to the South for a brief recuperation due to his poor health at the time, he probably would have had to live his entire life hiding as the child of a prisoner or live the life of a menial slave constantly controlled by the gazes of others.

Welliven, who seemed to have taken good care of him after he came to Peletta, would surely have known about such a past. If the emotion Welliven had briefly felt when he knew about Fay's hometown village was connected to Nathan Zuckerman's childhood, no matter how much he thought about it, there was nothing that came to mind other than being related to southern lineage.

'Of course, that guy Fay didn't have any southern features in his appearance... but the same was true for that guy Nahan.'

Nahan had an appearance that made it difficult for anyone to easily think of southern lineage at first glance if he hadn't revealed his lineage himself. If Yuder hadn't met that guy, he probably wouldn't have easily harbored such suspicion.

Yuder watched as Welliven's expression slowly changed. The old knight, who had his eyes wide open, opened his mouth and remained speechless for a while with an unfathomable expression, and finally managed to utter with difficulty.

"...That's right. How did you know?"

As expected. That was the case.

Yuder felt like a piece of the truth he didn't know had fallen into place in his heart.

Nah, Nathan called Aton out about that, Aton was literally referring to Nathan with a Southern slur for mixed bloods and didn’t think Nathan would know what it meant. Nathan rejected him because he knew he would have a better life in the empire with Kishiar than with a people who didn’t even respect him enough to not call him names.

Liandrin Kamiya

I think it's more that they don't see them as truely one of their own, rather than hate. They will use whoever they can. Aton tried winning over Nathan before, by promising him a better life in the South, just that Nathan is happy where he is, but someone living under difficult circumstances would probably be more susceptible.

Katsura Kureha

Oh shit... did the Southern cult manage to plant a sleeper agent right in the heart of the Cavalry? But I thought they hated people like Nathan who came from Southern decent but weren't born in the South?? Or what if the Fay in this game was being genuine in his admiration of Kishiar and he was out to get Yuder in the previous game because it was such an open secret that Yuder killed him? 🤔 So many questions!!
