One of the few advantages Savage's van has over the Highwayman's musclecar, is that it has over twice the mass. It can crash through things more easily than the Shelby Cobra.

Savage does that u-turn because they'd already passed the street that he needs to use to get to the bridge bypass, so he needs to go back to turn onto it. But even taking shortcuts, he better not dawdle.
