2021-12-09 21:32:09 +0000 UTCAlso John Cazale ("Fredo") and Meryl Streep were together during this period. Sadly Cazale passed away from cancer before this movie was even released. So this was his last movie. Cazale has probably the most incredible career for an actor who only made 5 movies: THE GODFATHER THE CONVERSATION THE GODFATHER PART II DOG DAY AFTERNOON THE DEER HUNTER Every movie he was in was nominated for Best Picture and 3 of them won. Insane. He is the definitive actor of the 70s. A true genius.

The Deer Hunter is about a man who believes in killing the animal in one shot. They end up playing Russian Roulette where one shot is all that is needed to kill you. I don't know exactly WHAT this means, but it has me thinking .

From the point when they are captured to the end of the film, it's basically just me wiping tears from my face for 2 hours. That being said, the roulette scene is, in my opinion, one of the greatest acted scenes of all time. De Niro's performance as he's gearing up to shoot their jailers is fucking phenomenal. John Cazale, who played Stanley, died of lung cancer before this film was released. In his career he only appeared in 5 films: Godfather, Godfather 2, The Conversation, Deer Hunter, and Dog Day Afternoon. All 5 were nominated for best picture! Finally, I think the track marks down Nicky's arm pretty much explains the head space he's been in for quite some time. He had been habitually using heroin (or opium, morphine, etc.) for a VERY long time :(

2021-12-07 01:58:27 +0000 UTCI watched this movie first run. I was in my early 20's and only missed getting drafted after high school. It was a very tough watch. I can say that you shouldn't get high before hand. I felt gutted after watching it. I haven't seen it since then but I will make myself watch it again with you guys. Walken deserved the Oscar that year.

2021-12-07 01:23:00 +0000 UTCI've heard that this movie was really impactful at the time because for years after the war, people didn't really want to think about. This was one of the first movies to try to deal with the trauma of the Vietnam War, for the soldiers themselves but also the country as a whole, which this sort of working class small town is meant to represent, and that loss of innocence. Michael Cimino, the director, is a kind of a controversial figure, he claimed to have been a decorated veteran etcetera, turned out to be less than true. But one thing besides this movie to credit him for is talking Oliver Stone into making "Platoon", which you know is based very much on his real experiences in Vietnam, Stone didn't think people were ready but Cimino convinced him otherwise. Man, Christopher Walken's performance was absolutely amazing, everyone was great of course but to me he stands out, heartbreaking. One last thing, the actor who played Stanley (and Fredo), John Cazale, was in a relationship with Meryl Streep at the time, and actors who worked with him like Al Pacino and De Niro say he taught them a lot about acting. He sadly died of cancer not long after this movie, Meryl Streep stayed by his side, she's said that he was the love of her life.
