22 years!! That's lovely πŸ₯° And I'm so glad you found that therapist. The people pleasing is so destructive - I'm slowly learning that πŸ˜… It such a difficult habit to break!

I'm Autistic, Now What

Thank you! The upside of the date we chose was that absolutely no one else was getting married at the courthouse that day! It's been 22 years since then, and it definitely wasn't the first time boundaries were crossed by family members! I was very much a people-pleaser in recent decades, masking to the best of my ability but never pulling it off properly or fitting in (and paying a heavy price later). It has been exhausting! It wasn't until just recently (early 2022) that I found a trauma-informed therapist (who specializes in Autistic/ADHD individuals) who taught me about setting boundaries and asserting myself! It feels good to finally listen to my own needs!

Really great topics, but I’m most curious about your anti-social wedding πŸ˜‰

I LOVE that it was a stormy Friday the 13th, but sorry that your family members were pushy and didn't take your wishes into account. That's so frustrating 😩

I'm Autistic, Now What

I'm definitely curious about your wedding! My husband (ADHD) and I (Autistic/ADHD) did a "courthouse wedding" on a stormy Friday 13th as we had hoped to make it less of a social event. We asked the commissioner to omit anything religious--which garnered us some strange looks (we live(d) in Alabama). Some of our closest family members showed up--and were very pushy about taking video/photos (which I had asked they not do)--so it was honestly not the most pleasant experience for me. My in-laws also planned an event afterward that we both had to attend. We both felt like our families just made too big a deal over it, and we looked at it like it was a piece of paper that did not validate our love for each other in any way. I can remember we both crashed for several days after it.
