The Alltistic Podcast Episode 5 - How our School Experiences Differed Allistic vs Autistic

I still haven't remembered what I was going to say at the start 😂 RIP Meg's thought.

School toilets, jam doughnuts, and being 'gift & talented'.

Here's a bit of info about how UK school works if anyone overseas gets lost!: https://www.brightworldguardianships.com/en/guardianship/british-education-system/

The next part is coming soon!

thoughts are like clouds, sometimes you can run your hand through them and catch them. Other times they just slip through your fingers and poof , gone. But if you're very lucky you might catch it.

Jello sounds cheaper to make than jam.

Argy

Jelly is basically a gelatin that's only flavored with fruit juice and sugar, not actual fruit pieces. Jam contains mashed up or small fruit pieces in addition to fruit juice and it also usually has more sugar, and then you have preserves that can contain slices or even whole pieces of fruit. Jelly is the lightest and easiest to spread and they get thicker and chunkier and harder to spread from jelly to jam to preserves. Then there are other types like marmalades, compotes, conserves, and fruit butters like apple butter, but these are more specialized and less common, and not as likely to be confused with the others like jam and jelly are.

Yeah why do we need to make it confusing?? Maybe it was a regional thing initially?

Kayla

ohhhh i didnt know that and im american lmao i just never understood the difference so thank u for educating me lol

Aqua DeMoney

i never understood why we have jam and jelly when theyre basically the same thing tbh i mean ig jelly’s softer maybe? like more spreadable or smth? idk english sucks or apparently american english lmao😭💀

Aqua DeMoney

Aww, thank you!! 💛 Next part coming soon!

Also, what you call jelly is Jell-o for us, but we have jam and jelly, which are somewhat different but basically jam. You should try a pb&j- delicious!

Kayla

You two are so fun to listen to- you got the banter in there 😉 Looking forward to part two! Also, thanks for the guide about British schools.

Kayla

In my dialect of US English (Ohio), jelly and jam can be used somewhat interchangeably, but technically Jelly is made from fruit juice (and gelatin) while jam is made from the fruit

Nath

Ahh, well that might make more sense! I watched it when I was in my early teens and not sure if I ever watched the whole thing through again after that, so I am not an authority 😂

Uh oh - time to disappear into research 😂

I'm Autistic, Now What

Aww, thank you for listening!

Not to say there's nothing problematic in Mean Girls (it's flawed for sure but I love it anyway), but if I remember correctly, the main character didn't grow up in South Africa, but in another part of Africa (I think Kenya?) and her parents were scientists specifically studying the animals. That might make the whole "students as safari animals" thing make a little more sense maybe? If she basically grew up in a national park hearing wildlife talked about all the time by her parents? I'm not sure I'm even remembering the movie details correctly, but that's my recollection 🤷‍♀️

I don't remember much about my early schooling in Southern California, but I do remember it was in a Montessori classroom attached to a church. This would probably be your Nursery level. Here's way too much reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Montessori?wprov=sfla1

Love listening to your podcast, feels like I'm hanging out with the cool peeps 😎🥰🥳

From memory jelly is Jello in the states. Around TC 29:00 Lewis maybe dysgraphic (bad hand writing) and it sounds like developmental milestones they were looking at to see if it flagged anything (I've seen the block thing with my kids but not sure exactly what it checks for).

Glen Rose

Yes, the disgrace being Lewis missing half of the FCC game right? /j

Ben Rice

It's a disgrace!

I'm Autistic, Now What

why don't our daylight savings line up, cuz I accidentally made lewis miss the first half of the FCC game

Ben Rice

Lewis just JAMMED his way into top 5 accents

Ben Rice

Jelly is jam with the seeds and chunks/pulp strained out.
