Like you, I really don't have any strong attachment/nostalgia to the original movies, so this interpretation of Freddy didn't ruin anything for me. In this one, he really is a monster. In his past life (child molester/killer) and in his "dream form". I know I'm in the minority, but I like that they confirmed it. I never rooted for him, so this makes it even easier to be disgusted with him. This is just my opinion, in the previous ones, the idea of him was scarier... but when you saw him, he was cheeky, cracking jokes, etc.. Yes, he was killing, however (to me) it seemed very tongue in cheek. Though there was always a sexual aspect when he would interact with the girls, so in my mind, he was a child predator as well as a killer. Having said that, I do recognize the cultural impact he had. Everyone's heard of Freddy.
