I finished the book. Not tell the end do they mention that Michael is their ward, but Spock still doesn’t seem like they really know each other. Michael goes behind phillipa’s back to send a message to Spock in the beginning. At the end she calls her out for it but says to in simple words to keep doing it if it’s to help the crew. Matt is there history in canon that says that a human learning on Vulcan can develop enhanced hearing because Michael has it. Also Spock and Michael mind meld and their connection last after they disconnected to split up on a mission but still can communicate. It seems they tacked on the ward at the last chapter to cover their butts.

Has anyone read the discovery lead in book “Desperate hours” Michael and Spock refer to each other in unfamiliar ways. Spock refers to her as a family friend of her parents, she refers to him as some kid she once knew growing up. They also refer to Michael as having improved hearing due to growing up on Vulcan. Pike and the enterprise meet up with the Shenzhou. I’m only half way through. So things might change but seems strange.
