I really like the idea of merging the characters of Guinan and Troi into one character that accomplishes the role of both... Unparalleled listener, uncanny insight into emotions and behavior, a teacher quality, a diplomatic quality, woo-woo perception of things that can't quite be detected using all their advanced technology... Whereas Picard's diplomatic acumen comes from experience and skill, Troi's would come from instinct, talent and psychic insight.

I’m a bit behind, but I wanted to comment on the anonymous message regarding the criticisms of Troi and Crusher. As a 30-something female who grew up idolizing Troi, I can honestly say that your criticisms on how the characters are portrayed are spot-on. I don’t find them offensive at all especially considering you always make it clear that the fault lies in the writing. I always loved the Troi character growing up but looking at things now through adult eyes it’s clear that the writers didn’t know what to do with the character. I can remember reading an article years ago where Marina Sirtis talked about how much she enjoyed the the season 6 or 7 episode “Face of the Enemy” specifically because of how well her character was finally used; and though there are definitely duds in the last couple of seasons, I do feel there are moments when the writers almost get it right (except when Crusher has sex with the ghost, that was wrong on so many levels). Finally, and I know it isn’t canon, I’ve been reading the Titan books in an attempt for more Trek and in those series Troi is used as a diplomatic officer. I find this roles suits her better than ship’s councilor and I really wish the show writers would have used her this way throughout the series.

I'm so glad the conversation about how awful the writers were to the female characters came up. I've watched tng my entire life and honestly, the way troi and crusher were presented on the show made me hate being female. They were constantly attacked and assaulted and didn't do anything heroic. My young self thought that that's all I had to look forward to, so I distanced myself from anything girls liked to do, even avoided having female friends until middle school. Honestly, it screwed me up mentally for quite a while. Though I don't only place the blame on trek- female characters were handled that way in almost every show on TV at the time. Representation matters. And I was represented as weak, stupid and helpless. I hated that. Season 6 and 7 were my saving grace for tng as far as female characters go. Troi becomes a good counselor and crusher becomes confident and self sufficient. What I wouldn't do to send my 5 year old self a copy of Wonder Woman... Writing aside, it was really nice to see a (to my young eyes) middle eastern/Greek looking woman with a weird accent that wasn't southern, British or Spanish. My mom is Iranian and speaks with an accent to this day. Everyone points it out, but to me that's just her voice. I really loved seeing someone who sounded like her on TV. Troi was my tv mom, especially when she became a bad ass scientist.
