It is my understanding that they did their best to work around the budgetary restrictions of season 4 by doing 3 part episode arcs. Spreading out the cost of sets and guest stars and f/x across three episodes telling one story and film them all simultaneously, making season 4 essentially a collection of tv movies. And honestly I think it works great. I believe it’s part of the reason why the season is so popular. (There is also some wonderful trekker fan service). I wish Discovery would employ this model honestly as I think plot holes would pop up less and when they do it would be easier to move on, but it would still be somewhat serialized for those that need that. The cut budget of Enterprises did cost us one thing that might have been excellent (or utterly terrible) - a guest appearance by William Shatner playing an old Mirror Mirror Kirk who, tried to escape the Mirror universe following the fall of the Terran empire (thanks to the now enlightened Spock) by trying to recreate the transporter accident from that Original Series episode and cross over to the Prime Star Trek Universe. He succeeded, but also accidentally traveled back in time a hundred years or so. Even across three episodes they could not come close to meeting Shatner’s normally heightened Kirk price-tag, made even higher at the time given his renewed Boston Legal popularity. My source on all of this is the “The Fifty Year Mission: The Next 25 Years,” and those two massive oral histories are everything you would hope them to be.

2021-05-11 23:25:42 +0000 UTCPardon me for being crass, but here goes: Like Doree, my wife is not a Trekkie, but allows me to enjoy my nerdy shows while I allow her to enjoy her murder/ghost shows. As I’m watching this episode, she walks in and I pause. She looks at the screen and back at me. “Space Spider or Space Jizz?” Caught me off guard as that’s not a term she frequents, but also… not incorrect.
