DISCOVERY s4e8 "All In"

We're back in a cantina/casino, but this time it's okay.  Owo gets called up to the major character big leagues to kick some ass, Book and Michael's old buddy really lays on the "Made Up Word, Word We Know" game thick, and Andy and Matt wonder if Disco is just slotting in characters like Vance to fill whatever plot need they have, switching Vance and Rillak's personalities as necessary.

that's an interesting analogy.

As for this episode, I actually liked it on its own merits. I hear Matt’s point that it doesn’t move the meta-plot at all, and I think it’s indicative of a mistake they made all season long. It feels like they heard the audience’s feedback of wanting more episodic content and started doing shows like this that are more like standalones, but by keeping them tied to the season plot they’re trying to have their cake and eat it too. One of the things s1 of disco did well was truly lean into the serialized format, and I think they would benefit from picking a lane and committing more completely in the future.

This episode marked the point in this season where I started coming over to the Bazerewsky camp. The conflict between Book and Burnham felt organic and earned, representing the rebel part of her vs the Star fleet side. Where the species 10C stuff goes felt very Star Trek-y. Was all the execution perfect? No. But it felt more like something I wanted to watch regularly, which was better than previous. But, I realized in the hails section they missed a great opportunity with the Zora - Stammits relationship by having him come around and be her pal at the end. If he had maybe accepted her begrudgingly and still had his doubts, that could have made for some good Spock-McCoy style conflict over the rest of the season, made all the more poignant because the two of them need each other to be all they can be (since he’s the navigator for her spore drive.) That was frustrating.
