We didn’t realise she was in the Spanish version too! It’s a great movie! ☺️

So fun watching you two watch this one. It’s one of my all time favorite movies. The original Spanish version, “Open Your Eyes” also stars Penelope Cruz in the same role. I couldn’t wait to see if you got it in the end. You seemed to for the most part. Any association with Sophia ended the night of the dance club. Everything up to that night really happened. I know you get that, but it’s the most important dividing line of the movie.

Yeah lots to unpack with it! I think there is so much that could be open to interpretation. I have been meaning to watch an explanation video on it. I do understand for the most part but I like to fully understand to fully appreciate lol. Thank you for filling in some of the blanks! 😃

I'm glad you enjoyed it and, indeed it's almost a completely different movie upon 2nd and 3rd watches. I've seen it many times and I swear...EVERY time I see it I notice something new. I was very adamant about assuring you that would WILL BE confused. I'd highly recommend looking up an explanation video on youtube. It was very interesting to see you along the way analyzing and trying to figure out what was happening. You picked up on a lot more than I did on my first watch. The ending is open to interpretation as far as when he was about to hit the ground from jumping and then the voice says "Open your eyes"...and then the eye opens...was that really him waking up? My take on it is that, yes...150 years in the future they would be able to bring him back from cryogenic freeze. Cryogenics has always been a very interesting sci-fi trope and there have been real life instances where someone falls through an icy lake or pond and remains under freezing water for like 30 min or so an are revived because of the "preservation." So, in this particular story...the idea of Life Extension when Tilda Swinton's character was explaining it was that, if you had a terminal disease or whatever else...for a price and of course a CONTRACT...as 1 option...they will freeze you and someday in the future when science and medicine advances to a point that all those diseases and maladies could be cured...they can bring you back...OR their "newest option" (as she said) would be continuing on in the ageless state of lucid dreaming where you can have whatever kind of life you want. After the nightclub...the heartbreak of Sophia seeming to be so uncomfortable with him depressed him to the point that life became too painful. So, he found L.E. browsing the internet an apparently signed a contract with them arranging to have them take custody of his body immediately upon "death." The accident, his disfigurement, and the nightclub were all real. If you go back and watch when he "wakes up" on the street...you can hear a weird sound that's kinda like a record player needle moving across the vinyl which was L.E. splicing the lucid dream. Everything seemed so perfect after that...until the subconscious guilt of being so careless and reckless with Julie and the heartbreaking idea that Sophia wouldn't want him because of his disfigurement and would instead fall for his best friend caused a glitch in the "matrix" (if you will) and eventually creating a nightmare. If you re-watch you can see places where the nightmare starts to manifest...like Julie appearing for an instant and scaring him and then he snaps out of it quickly like it was a jump scare...or turning the light on and seeing face disfigured when he thought it was fixed...then snapping out of it again...and it gets worse and worse and more "unnerving" as time passes. The lucid dream option obviously came with the option to come out of it "if anything went wrong" so they apparently have you choose a scenario that will be your 'moment of choice'...I guess so they can be sure it's what you truly want to do. So, he decided he wanted live a REAL life. My favorite line in the movie is when he talks to Sophia before he jumps...he says "Here we are...I'm frozen and you're dead...and I love you." Then Sophia says, "It's a problem." My biggest takeaway from the movie is rather simple, though...and that is...our lives are what WE make them. Even with perfect looks and more money than you'd ever need...you still can't BUY happiness.
