Throwback: Simulations from 2013

Hey guys!

I just found an imgur album with some old rigid body simulations (and other stuff) from 2013. You can check out the whole album here: https://imgur.com/a/LICtX. I think the purpose of the album was to explore looping animations using Blender and After Effects, so it's a combination of 2D and 3D stuff.

It could be that these GIFs are only interesting to me, but I somehow got really inspired today by rediscovering these! I'll embed some of my favorites below in this post. (Not sure if they will play in the mobile app, but they should work in browser).

Crash and Swipe! If you look carefully on the left side of the sphere before it fractures, it's missing a piece.

Smacking cubes with the Cube Swatter 2000! The towel in the background is from a Blender Guru tutorial on how to make towels. In retrospect that is such a weird thing to add.

Mustache Drop: I think it really helps having different sized objects in the simulation. And it's satisfying with so little friction on the ground, so they can slide smoothly down! Also this one feels smoother than the other ones, but I'm not sure why.

Sphere pickup! To this I still think it's really difficult to animate objects being picked up in Blender. Do you animate the parenting influence of the sphere? Do you animate the visibilty of two identical spheres, swapping the parented one?? I have no idea. I also remember struggling so much trying to make these stacks of cubes not fall down before the claw breaks through. Should have known about the 'Start Deactivated' feature!

Rigid Body and Cloth! Here is another one where I thought I could get away with deleting the pieces that were glitching out. But as you can see, the pieces are clearly missing in the sphere before impact. Oh well!

Thanks for scrolling through my old animations with the absurdly big watermarks! Hope they inspired you too!

PS: New tutorial about caustics dropping early next week! Here's a sneak peek:

Thanks for the support!

Love to see tutorials on these. I've played a bit with physics, but definitely still a beginner. I love your teaching style. Very clear and concise. Some online tutorials rush through things so fast it's hard to keep up or to get your head around it, whereas yours talk about what you are trying to achieve, how to do it and clearly mention the keyboard shortcuts. Great work.

Glad you liked it! Yes, it's like playing a game!

!! :D Very excited about it too!!

Thanks for sharing, these were really nice! Easy to see why playing with physics sims is so much fun! :D
