Marble Bust in the River

Hello Solid and Material viewers!

As you may have seen in the latest video, I have been experimenting with a way to create caustics in Blender using procedural textures!

The setup is a textured spot light that uses the difference between two Voronoi textures to create something that I think resembles caustics. It's very fascinating to play around with, especially when animated!

This ended up being an unusually render-heavy setup, so please don't be discouraged if it's very slow. It can be efficient to render at lower resolutions/samples to get a feel to the scene first, then try and increase settings at your own pace.

If the scene becomes too slow to render as an animation, remember that caustics are great in still images too (maybe even better)!

The assets used (CC0) is from Poly Haven: Bust model; ground texture.

Please feel free to explore rendering different types of objects with this method. It's fascinating how almost any model looks more photorealistic with caustics!

Looking forward to see what you guys will create with this (feel free to use the hashtag #polyfjord on instagram)!

Thanks so much for the support!
