A Chess Set That Works in 2D and 3D

Last week I experimented with the boolean modifier. So here's what I ended up with: A 3D chess set, which when viewed from above, looks like a 2D chess set!
Here is what it looks like when viewed from above. Looks like a regular 2D chess set, right?
But, wait! A transition! *shwooosh* (This looks much better when animated, trust me!)

The .blend file below contains the scene prepared for rendering, but if you enable the hidden collection "Original Pieces with Boolean", you'll find the original 3D chess pieces before they have the boolean modifier applied:
Maybe it could be possible to 3D print these chess pieces? I have no idea, I've never tried 3D printing. (But if someone is crazy enough to do it (and figure out what to do with the pieces with loose parts), please send me a picture of your results!!)
The scene is rendered in Blender 3.0.0 Beta, and works surprisingly well in Eevee too. Blender is growing to become a truly amazing software. Very excited about the full 3.0 release in December!
