New video: Real Time EXR Workflow

Hey guys!

In this video we'll use Blender, Davinci Resolve and DJV to get real time playback of EXR sequences. We'll also get filmic view transform working in both Davinci Resolve and DJV, which makes this a pretty smooth workflow for previewing so much data!

Stick around at the end for an extra comparison of EXR vs PNG!

Hope you'll like it!

PS: I know that all these YouTube videos are public, and you can get notifications by subscribing on YouTube, so this might feel like a double post to some. But I thought I'll post here as well, because without your support on Patreon these tutorials wouldn't be possible to make and share for free! And perhaps there are some questions that is easier for me to answer here if you have them. Let me know!

Thank you so much for the support!

Best,

Asbjørn

Hello Polyfjord, I want to thank you for the amazing work you’re doing. I’m not sure if you’ll see my message on this old post, but I thought I’d give it a try, haha. The link to the cubic files you're using in this tutorial seems to be broken. I searched online for an alternative link, but I couldn’t find any. Could you please re-upload them or provide a valid link? Thank you!

Oh good question!! In this case the simple deform modifier was used to bend the metal a bit, but in hindsight I don’t think it really would be necessary! Because it’s also combined with some suble rotation animation. So I think you would be able to achieve a very similar effect by simply animating the rotation properties only. So you could try and add a tiny bit of subtle rotation to the ramp after the ball hits, and it should require far less tweaking than using the deform modifier to bend it. And then the trick is to frame the image a bit more zoomed in, so you can’t properly see that it would be bending either. I’m sorry I’m not able to give a good explanation on how to do it with the bend modifier, because it required so much tweaking. I haven’t really found any good tutorials for it. Hope this workaround helps!

Just a quick question for you! At 7:50 on your "Tipping over stacks of cubes in Blender" video, you talk about adding a layer of animation on top of the baked simulation. I notice that you fiddle with a simple deform modifier... I've tried to recreate the conditions to do this myself but cannot seem to get the effect right. Is this something you'd ever consider going into a little more depth on recreating at all? Feels like the missing piece to a little project I'm working on.

Alpha channel is supported by EXR, so transparency will be possible just like PNG :D

Polyfjord

One question how do you handle transparency with the EXRs over PNG's like a Still shot affinityphoto

Drzigzag

Sure, I can post it tomorrow :)

Polyfjord

I want the animation at the beginning :') please !

Nice!! Glad it could help!! The smaller file size of the DWAA codec is especially welcome when you try and load an entire image sequence into ram! It’s really great

Polyfjord

Haha yes!!

Polyfjord

Hahaha. What an amazing comment

ILM's bar chart budget must have run out by file size comparison

I've recently been wondering about the specific advantages of using EXR output so it's been useful to learn it broken down from your perspective. Also, the tip about dwaa compression is gold. Makes both the advantages and workflow-use accessible.

Damn That’s 🔥 Hotshi now I love PNG's but now I can OpenExR EXR Get compression & colorspace plus filmmit Wow!@#$ I like when you say but, There is a "Problem" Like danger "Will Robinson" And then you solved. "shite" like it was butter Problem solved DJV Some new free. "shite" I "Love" my new workflow So glad you thought of it Simply ......................................genius Damn That’s 🔥 Hotshi
