And you're absolutely right that skipping to XY would be doing a massive disservice to both you and the show. Ash actually has really good development. And yeah Diamond and Pearl is easily the best series in terms of story and character development, but you still shouldn't skip to that either. So I'm going to do what I can to try and help this show do well on your channel. Hopefully it all works out.

Starting from XY Ash is basically your typical Shonen protag but its an excellent start for beginners since there's no callbacks to previous seasons. Generation 1-3 Ash is a complete savage just a grade A shit talker it's hilarious 😂. Sun and Moon is incredibly underrated. I just can't wait for you to meet Paul. Sinnoh is my favorite season.
