I probably need to create a wall that will go around the grandstand without being so high that it blocks the view of the backdrop, and then see what I can do about filling it with people...

It was a work of crazy people and the customer rarelly enjoyed it, because besides everything else was too expensive for what he wanted. Of course, if we're using gaming engines, things change. Look at the battles of Rome's wars and their similars. But there the requests are different.

I used crowds in city environments, but it was for architectural work and the figures (we work in 3DMax) were of very low resolution (the Lorettas would be an Asian luxury) and many of them without depth (type MOM). For things closer than here, the backgrounds were usually worked independently of the foreground (which were rendered and recorded in png) and then overlapped; The result depended heavily on lighting. In any case the machine (or the machines) has to be of the highest of possible range.
