The date of the second Game of Thrones book release that had Melisandre's first appearance and the year Melly theoretically would have been born lined up perfectly! Besides, if your name was Melanie, you'd probably just go by Melanie. If your name was Melisandre, going by Melly might be more appealing.

Agree, Melly for Melisandre seems more logical than for Melanie. I don't know any Melly Melanie's in real life, lol!
