Piece by Piece - AniMat's Reviews

Pharrell Williams, the man who brought us some of the biggest music hits in recent years like Happy and Drop It Like It’s Hot, has delivered the most unique animated film of the year with Piece by Piece. In this review, I’ll be looking into this documentary where Pharrell combined his life story with Lego animation to create a fun-filled movie that highlights his impact in the music career and his legacy of how he became one of the most influential music artists.

I have seen many biopics for the past several years when I started making reviews on social media and they can range from either great like Rocketman and that Weird Al movie, to mid movies like Bob Marley and Whitney Houston, to even bad like the Amy Winehouse movie. For this movie, I do find it at least good despite not pushing any boundaries as both of a biopic film and an animated film in general. There were some good ones like the Neville’s directing, the animation, heart, soundtrack, voice work, and some info I didn’t know about Pharrell Williams like his childhood for example. For criticisms, again not only I didn’t find anything new as biopic and as animated film, but I find it playing it safe especially not going into dark moments that Pharrell Williams has gone through or dealing with controversies like the Blurred Lines song that he got involved with Robin Thicke and T.I. since those two were controversial musicians at the time for example. I feel like Pharrell was trying to not shed any negative light about himself to avoid any criticism that he faced in the past and I would’ve appreciated if they went more deep into it. Not to mention that it’s PG rating kinda holds it back from going dark moments like what the other documentary animated film, Flee, did a few years back. Other than that though, I do find it good overall where only fans of the Lego brand and music in general including those that loves what Pharrell has done over the years like the 2000s decade and the Despicable Me franchise. Not one of the best animated films I seen this year but I enjoyed it.

Not for long given the rights will expire next year

So a good start for Lego with their new relationship with Universal. Have to say, Pharrell Williams did a bold move that could pay very well. Lets see if this movie will hold together at the box office.

This was.... unexpected! In a good way! When I saw this movie, i was like, what is ANIMAT gonna think of this? it's not his usual animated shtick, so, i was curious... I'm glad he liked like I did!

I ended up really liking this movie, it really feels like a very unique Biopic especially with it being completely made out of LEGOs, the animation is really nice looking and it does a great job at looking into Pharrell Williams life and the people he worked it.

I’ll say this is one of my most anticipated movies of this year. While it ain’t from Warner Bros, I always thought the LEGO films were the best franchise there is. With the topic of Pharrell, while I’ll admit I’m not into “pop music” but when it comes to Pharrell’s works I would say he has some great taste in music, I always found enjoyment ever since the Despicable Me films and this does seem like it carries it as well as if it’s a collection of music videos! And with LEGOs being involved is like the best of both worlds!

Suppose if the world must keep making musical bios, best to get creative. This definitely avoids say, the Walk Hard stereotypes that recent films continue to fall into.
