Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed - AniMat's Reviews

The long-awaited remake is finally real with Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. In this review, I’ll be returning to the Wasteland once again, but now in modern consoles with a new coat of paint. And as one of the game’s biggest fans, I’ll be looking into everything to how the team at THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp updated the whole thing, from the upgrade to the graphics, to fixing the camera, to all the changes that makes this different from the original on the Nintendo Wii. Will this remake live up to Disney’s most underrated video game?

Glad to hear it was one of the good remakes.

Correction: I think Mat said that was coming during the play through of Rebrushed.

Glad you love it! Also, do I detect some unfinished business?

Well glad to know that this is amazing as the original, I can even relate since that how I felt when I play the Rehydrated version of Battle for Bikini Bottom. Ironically I can also state they even have the same issues too, since all I can say what is new are the graphics and some of the movements maybe a sprinkle of new voiceover lines and that’s kinda it. Everything else feels like both an up/downgrade compared to the original. It still a great game nonetheless but I feel the original has a lot more “Umph” if you know what I mean.

I have to say I’m grateful that Epic Mickey exists because if it wasn’t for the game itself or getting it for Christmas a decade ago and playing it myself, I wouldn’t have discovered you or become one of your fans and patrons. It was your original Epic Mickey files where I was introduced to you and I was glad to see somebody else passionate about the game as I was; although maybe not to the extent as you. Know that you were not alone in having played the games. And your Epic Mickey files really helped me to understand a lot of Disney characters and attractions better and provided a lot of interesting information that I never knew about. My favorite being the one from your file on Horace Horsecollar when you briefly talked about the scrapped TV series Maximum Horsepower. Now that you’ve reviewed the game and you’re going to update the Epic Mickey Files similar to how you updated your Animation Lookback on Walt Disney Animation Studios, my experience with you is about to come full circle. Of course, I’ll still be watching newer content from you on here and YouTube and supporting you, but what I mean is it’ll be like bringing back the curiosity and enjoyment I had from watching your Epic Mickey Files. I just wanted to share my own personal connection to the game and how much it has helped me to become one of your fans.

When it comes to the original Epic Mickey, I remember playing it a lot back when I was a kid back when it first came out and really liked it a lot, despite some of its problems like the camera, heck I even remember that my first introduction to your channel was because of the Epic Mickey files, and they helped me become more familiar with the forgotten characters of Wasteland, including Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, so when Rebrushed was announced, I definitely got excited, and Disney definitely made a great choice bringing in THQ Nordic and Purple Lamp to work on it especially given their past experience working on the SpongeBob Battle For Bikini Bottom remake, Rehydrated, where they have had experience working on a remake of a cult favorite game based on an already existing IP, as for the game itself, honestly it’s definitely on par with the original game, heck I would definitely say it’s better in some ways. Visually it looks great and it for a massive upgrade compared to the Wii version, even on the Switch it looks nice, the gameplay stays true to the original on top of giving Mickey some new moves, like the ability to run, dash and ground pound, the ability to customize the controls to your liking, the fact that they fixed that camera, bringing in the costumes from Epic Mickey 2, and the fact they even gave you the ability to replay the projector levels to recollect any collectibles you missed, since in the original you couldn’t re enter most of them, and of coarse the ability to skip the projector levels, I will admit the that when it comes to the motion controls in the remake, they weren’t handled the best on the PS5 and Switch versions, especially when the curser is stuck in the middle, that’s probably one thing the original did better was with the motion controls. But overall, I will say this really ended up being a worthy remake to the original Epic Mickey and it definitely lived up to the hype. And honestly it’s great to see how Epic Mickey managed to gain a cult following over the years where it really has gained a lot more appreciation over the years and that is so nice to see. Also if that ending of your review means what I think it means, then honestly I can’t wait to potentially see the return of a certain video series you did years ago.
