Moana 2 - AniMat's Reviews

Let’s see how far this review will go with talking about Moana 2. In this review, I’ll be looking into how Walt Disney Animation Studios made the unusual move of taking a planned Disney+ series and turning it into the Moana 2 we have today. Did this move go swimmingly, or did it make the sequel sink?

and I don't believe in moral intelligence

no there is a huge difference between being dumb and being despicable bigotry is despicable and terrible plans are dumb

Haileigh Tenney

Sorry, Mat. I’m in too deep, so I asked Shannon what her rating would be, thinking it was too funny not to double down.

Trenton Girone

Still feels surreal that a Disney film released in theaters in 2024 was made in a similar manner to the 1990s DTV sequels.

Lady Tyler Bio Rodriguez

Financially it didn't However Critically people are still gonna hate on Disney because they think they're cool or they were disappointed by the marketing and nostalgia for the first

Jeff B. Hughes

Not as horrible as Milo’s Return and Belle’s Magical World, but not as good as Ralph Breaks The Internet and Frozen 2

Tom Jackson

I was hoping this sequel could be at least but that pretty much the most I got from this film. I was worrying of what should’ve been a limited TV series before being turned into theatrical sequel for the big screens as it been announced earlier this year and as a result, it a downgrade of the original that suffers it pacing, some flat characters, hit or miss comedy, weak writing, some retread moments, and playing it safe if trying to capture what made the original film worked. Yeah there are some positives like the animation, voice acting, and some songs though they aren’t memorable than the ones that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote for the first movie, but still it came out just another average Disney movie that I seen for the past couple of films. For what it worth, at least the sequel is not as bad or dreadful than the upcoming live action remake by the time it comes out in 2026. So for that live action remake, what can I say except, no thank you.

Same, Jon.

Wow, really? My cousin told my aunt she HATED it, but her kids loved it.

Trenton Girone

I think I'll wait till this comes to Disney+

Despite the rushed storyline, I like to know if this result of the directors being stubborn not to extend the film length. I would’ve been fine if it went for two hours maybe more just to give out more development. I even think Kung Fu Panda 4 had better character development compared to this. Sorry to say my hope just completely dashed.

Alan Oliva

Well, now this is a major oof to hear. I guess it’s true follow ups are not Disney specialties. I’ll just be glad they didn’t touch Tangled the Series. I can only hope they actually make an extension to this, once it comes to home media. And that what makes it sad, I think it would be better off as a series, if this comes with deleted content you might as well put it together to hope if it fixes the issues. I already get concerned with Disney content and now it has turn even their films are taking a toll on quality. Disney in another dark age.

Alan Oliva

Instead of making a live-action remake of Moana, they should resurrect the series by restoring the episodes edited to fit the feature length format as they originally were and release it on Disney+ so viewers can have a newfound appreciation by seeing it as was intended and connect more with the newer characters and let the songs sink in so they can be enjoyed more.

As someone who really likes the first Moana, I consider the sequel to be just ok, it’s definitely not the worst thing out there, but I honestly do agree that it would’ve worked out a lot better as a Disney+ series, the story honestly feels rushed in some parts where you can definitely tell where this was originally supposed to be a Disney+ series, however the animation is still gorgeous as in the first movie, the characters are honestly underdeveloped and a bit bland in some ways, and the songs are a mix, some are good while others try to copy the songs from the original and aren’t as memorable. Overall I thought this was just ok and a definite downgrade compared to the original, and like I said I definitely think this would’ve worked out so much better if it stayed as a Disney+ series, there is a part of me that feels like the only reason this was turned into a movie was because of the heads at Disney, where it felt like a “desperate times call for desperate measures” kind of situation where Disney was basically desperate to have a hit again from Disney Animation after their past failures like Strange World and Wish, regardless of what you think about them, or their other films not doing well because of things not in their control like the pandemic, and I assume they knew how popular Moana was on streaming so they pretty much went ahead and did that, not to mention in a way you can tell at this point Disney is pretty much desperate for their animated films to become hits again from both Disney Animation and Pixar, even if it means relying on their biggest animated franchises to do so, rather it be with Moana 2 or what they have coming up with Zootopia 2 or Frozen 3 & 4 with Disney Animation, or from earlier this year with Inside Out 2 or with Toy Story 5 and Incredibles 3 from Pixar, and considering how much money Moana 2 made over Thanksgiving weekend I think it’s safe to say it’s already a guaranteed hit and Disney Animation’s first major hit since Frozen 2 before the pandemic, and could make over a billion dollars at the box office. However regardless of how Moana 2 turned out, it’s still far better than what we got with Spellbound, and I would honestly take an ok Moana sequel that was originally supposed to be a Disney+ series over an unnecessary Moana live action remake, seriously just based on those leaked set photos of the remake alone, it looks bad even just laughably bad.

Justin Monti

I find it interesting that a 4.5 for spellbound isn't enough to play the game over music from sonic but a 6.5 is enough to play the music from who wants to be a millionaire.

Anthony Estrada

I feel pretty much the same. Amazing animation, the old characters still retain their charm and personality, the themes are there to make a great film, and the world remains the same. However, the film has signs of this being a tv show written all over it with the story feeling like a rushed version of the first film, new characters having missed potential, songs feeling like they try to follow in the first film but without Miranda doing the songs, and weaker humor compared to the first. It adds up to an ok sequel but like you said, a clear downgrade from the first and one of Disney's weaker animated films in a long time. 6/10

Anthony Estrada

This Disney sequel may not be in the same lengths of “Ralph Breaks the Internet” or “Frozen 2,” but it’s at least better than Disney’s direct-to-home media sequels. And probably better than the upcoming Moana remake.
