Persepolis - AniMat's Classic Reviews

It’s one thing to learn about the revolution and the war that happened in Iran, but it’s another to live it, which is what Persepolis is all about. In this review, I’ll be looking into the Oscar-nominated indie animated feature that tells the young life of Marjane Satrapi and how she experienced some of the darkest moments in Iran’s history all in the pursuit for her own freedom, as she brings to life her acclaimed graphic novels with animation.

Persepolis - AniMat's Classic Reviews

Even I’m not much of a big political person, despite me doing plenty of posts trying to spoke out my words, and let me tell you, it’s not fun, hence why I try not to get into it too much for the sake of my mental health. But i definitely agree with you about movies like Zootopia and Persepolis doing great at providing progressive storytelling.

Toontastic Juju

Glad it exists as we need more films like this.

Just found out it’s Pokemon 2000, which I don’t get. Didn’t that movie receive bad reviews?

Hunter O'Laughlin

I couldn’t hear the music. Something’s wrong with my earbuds.

I adored Persepolis! I read the first graphic novel back in 2016 when I was in high school since it was on my English class' summer reading list that year and that was the one I picked because I recognized its name because of this movie. I loved the book so much that I checked out the second book to read the whole story before watching the film and it blew me away. Its themes continue to be timely as we continue to fight against right wing extremism. It tackles some dark and heavy themes, but isn't without its moments of humor as Marjane's offkey cover of "Eye of the Tiger" still makes me chuckle. It's one of those films that makes me excited to seek out indie animated films as I've discovered many hidden gems that I've shared with my family over the years and have loved. They offer so many different experiences you wouldn't get from the mainstream studios, whether they be through their style, subject matter, politics, or just the fact that there's more for adults. It's what led me to discover the works of studios like Cartoon Saloon or filmmakers like Adam Elliot becoming some of my new favorites, and always keeping an eye on anything distributors like GKIDS acquire.

The importance of this film hasn't diminished over the years. In a sense that's good but also sad.

Lady Tyler Bio Rodriguez

This looks beautiful!

Did you not hear the music? It’s Lugia’s song a very famous tune in anime music. Also the Caballeros isn’t really a “Sequel”

Alan Oliva

Pokemon 2000? How? That film’s got bad reviews from critics. I thought it’d be The Three Caballeros.

Hunter O'Laughlin

I knew my love for music would come to this!

Alan Oliva

You are correct, my friend!

What is the next review

Is it Pokemon 2000? I recognize that musical score anywhere!

Honestly I'm not really a political person. Not that I'm against it, I'm just more in a sense too... "Naive" to get into it. Mainly even if I tried it always ends with off either one part or one group would end up being unsatisfied with my choices. (Even now I still kinda get some bad comments for choosing Joe Biden.) When I comes to Movies however, That is where I can be an understatement to what politics can do to where we can have a better future then we did beforehand like Zootopia, Black Panther, even The SpongeBob Musical since they made a unique use of showing off how being racism can be used as a weapon to break our culture instead of coming together. This however I find very fascinating and kinda investing. I heard so many people actually saying this is a Heck of a great movie, and now I feel like I have the full interest to get into it... Especially just to hear Marjane terrible singing! It's funny how that was the moment that got me sold into this!

Alan Oliva

Pokemon 2000? I know that music!

Alan Oliva

He said it was a 2K.

Shane Vance

Is it pokemon 2000?

Anthony Estrada

I think I can guess what’s the animated film you’re reviewing next. It’s The Three Caballeros considering it’s a sequel to Saludos Amigos, you reviewed Saludos Amigos back in January last year, and you thought the latter was alright while you’ve talked about growing up with The Three Caballeros as a kid in your Top 10 Favorite Disney Animated Films and several times in a nostalgic way.

Hunter O'Laughlin

I’ll definitely give Persepolis a chance if I can! I really love the animation and storytelling it delivers!

Toontastic Juju

So what’s the next review?

Star Clucy

I honestly haven’t seen this movie myself, but I definitely will give it a watch at some point, it definitely seems like a very powerful animated film that I’m certain some people could relate to nowadays. I honestly have no idea what the next classic review is gonna be but it should be interesting.

Justin Monti

Me Neither.

I still don’t get what the next review is?
