Lilo & Stitch (2025) - AniMat's Reviews

Experiment 626 is bringing his chaos to live-action in the 2025 remake of Lilo & Stitch. In this review, I’ll be looking into the alien’s next blockbuster and find out what is within this Disney live-action remake? Will this be another failure like what happened last time with Snow White, or will we discover something that we haven’t seen in years…an actual GOOD Disney live-action remake?

Im sure this film will spawn many more remakes. Pity.

Good? NoI refuse to believe that

Looks like I’m not missing much by choosing not to see the remake and sticking with the original. However, I have a feeling the upcoming live-action How to Train Your Dragon might end up ironically making the Lilo & Stitch remake more justified in existing.

It’ll be sad if Elio does terribly at the box-office because of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake and the rage-baiting reviews of that film because they’ve always complained of Pixar’s original animated films doing terrible financially at the box-office and this is their opportunity of supporting such an original animated film and it might be missed because they’re so focused on raging over the latest live-action remake.

I’ll just say now after seeing it yesterday due to being out of town over the weekend for a beach trip, I find it to be mediocre at best as a Disney live action remake. I have grew up with the franchise as a kid as I have seen the original, direct to home media sequels, and a TV series as well and even though the original will always be the best for me, I still enjoy having some with the franchise. For this remake, while I don’t find it to be really bad compared to the Snow White remake, it was bland for me. Even the story in remakes will always be weak to me, but when it comes to everything else like the his or miss visuals with Stitch itself looks good while Jumba and Pleakly looked awful, weak writing, some generic characters, inconsistent pacing where at times feels rushed, some hit or miss acting, and some unnecessary changes like the omitting the ugly ducking scene, Gantu, and especially what they horribly did to Jumba as a character because I felt disheartening to what they did to him as one of the examples of a character assassination aside from the miscast and visuals on him. Don’t even get me started with the ending as I find it not satisfied for what they did and missing the point of the theme of Ohana too. As for positives, I find Stitch fine both visually and acting wise given Chris Sanders came back to reprise his role, some of the actors did their part okay with the actress playing Lilo being the best of the bunch, the theme of ohana is still there, and some on set location looked nice even if it not on par with the beautiful water colors of the animation. I overall find it to be mediocre which even though I dislike the changes they did in certain scenes and characters, I feel like the themes and Marcel director make up from being just bad in my opinion. I will still prefer the original of course but I seen so much worst than some of the other Disney live action remakes I seen.

Glad you liked this one! The original Lilo & Stitch is my favorite Disney Animation film, and to be honest, I actually really liked the remake and put it among the best live action remakes. I agree that the climax is weaker and the ending change was a bit strange, but I don't think it's as terrible or dangerous as social media says, if a bit misguided. Otherwise, I had a really fun time. Dean Fleischer Camp and the cast did a great job with recapturing the chaotically funny yet warm hearted spirit that made the original a unique Disney classic. Maia Kealoha was the perfect Lilo, Chris Sanders is still irreplaceable, and I agree that Amy Hill had a ton of the funniest moments as Tūtū. But yeah, I am way more tired of the internet's obsessive hatred for the remakes more than the remakes themselves and it's being pushed way too far. Everything you said in the last episode of the podcast is correct. There are way more serious issues in this chaotic world, but the existence of a live action remake is not one of them. The internet refuses to accept that social media is not real life and their attacks have no impact on the offline general public. If they really do want the remakes to stop, they should just shut up, ignore it, and focus on giving attention to something they enjoy. But positivity doesn't get as much attention as hate watching and ranting about an easy punching bag saying the same points over and over does. I was naive thinking that maybe this one would go over smoothly and not as harshly coming off finally being done with the disastrous Snow White discourse yet before the ensuing nightmare that'll be the HTTYD remake shaping up to be DreamWorks' Lion King 2019, both the film itself and the discourse. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them won't be talking about Elio or KPop Demon Hunters (no matter how they are) because doing another remake rant is easier and gets more clicks.

Hey, honestly, if it is "Decent at best," I'm okay with it. I really don't mind the remakes at all since, at the end of the day, we'll always remain with the original, with a few exceptions, like some of the jokes that originated from them, I mean Snow White was fine, it wasn't great But did have a good time with it. In the case of Lilo & Stitch, While not as huge of a fan as other people (Including my cousins who would talk day in and out of it) I did enjoy the franchise and I did have a sense of anticipation for this, since for a long shot seem like it had the potential of being like a Disney "Star Wars" movie. Judging by what was stated here, seems like I was only half right considering they still sound like they carried some issues with the cast. Especially with Jumba being the full Antagonist and Pleakley being not as funny as Kevin MacDonald. (I know that is a spoiler, but people have been giving that out as if that was no secret) Also, it really seems to be going back to the "Maleficent" route when they took one of their iconic characters and turned them into a villain. For certain I know these will never be as fantastic as the original, but I'm glad that Disney can make something good once in a while that ain't a full-on animated picture.

For me, the original Lilo and Stitch is one of my favorite Disney animated films, heck even as I kid I remember I used to watch the Lilo and Stitch series a lot. As for the remake, I honestly have to agree and say it was actually pretty decent and one of the better Disney live action remakes, the story itself does a decent job of adapting the original animated films and some of the changes aren’t too bad, visually it does look impressive, especially with the CGI on most of the aliens especially with Stitch himself, although I agree both Jumba and Pleakley looked off, most of the characters are well acted especially with Chris Sanders back as Stitch and Maia Kealoha as Lilo, although I agree Zack Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen were miscast as Jumba and Pleakley even though their performances were fine they didn’t fit the parts, and their movie still has a lot of heart that made people love the original. However I will agree I’m not a fan of the way they changed the climax and the ending, I really did not like the way they basically got rid of Gantu in this version and basically made Jumba the main villain instead, and I’m definitely not a fan of the way they changed the ending, while it didn’t completely ruin the movie, it definitely did keep it away from being better. Overall, while this still isn’t a great movie and the animated film is still far superior, I still do think this is one of the better Disney live action remakes and it honestly could’ve been much worse. And honestly I think regardless of what people think about the movie it was guaranteed to be a hit no matter what, considering how iconic the original movie is and how it’s a lot more nostalgic compared to Snow White, and considering how it’s did manage to break the record for the biggest opening for a movie released during Memorial Day weekend, I think it’s already a guaranteed hit for Disney and will also most likely make over a billion dollars at the box office, I mean Stitch can literally fart out money whenever he pleases. However do think the hate and anger towards this movie for being a hit and people going to see it, it’s one thing for people to not care about this movie because of it being another Disney live action remake, but if those people are going to go as far and attack and harass either the people who did enjoy the movie or attack any of the cast and crew of the film just because people are excited for this movie, then honestly those people’s opinions should be completely invalid and it makes them look like total idiots.

I’m glad you had some enjoyment from this remake, AniMat, but I’m honestly going to pass on this one and stick with the original animated film. That one will be still remembered and beloved as Disney’s animated classics while the remake ends up falling into obscurity. It’s honestly amazing how the Cinderella remake released 10 years ago is the best live-action remake.
