One More Thing: Hangover Demon

Greetings Adventurers,

We're moving into a new theme of One More Thing releases for the next few months with a focus on Inns, Taverns, and Hotels meaning we get to play around with a lot of off-kilter ideas that we've been kicking around for more urban environments. It's something that I love crafting creatures for as you have to weave them into the civilized world just a bit more. That makes for a really fun challenge.

Design notes from Matthew:
I mean, a hangover demon seems like the most obvious thing in retrospect. A lot of what makes demons tick is causing pain and suffering in those that engage in common acts of debauchery. In Pathfinder lore, demons are typically created from the lost souls that die in horrific ways or lead particularly evil lives. When you put those parameters on it, it seems an obvious choice to lean into the consequences of your actions when you're indulging just a bit too much.
One really "fun" idea I had about this one was playing around one status effect and using that as the creature's theming. I went with poisoned in 5E and sickened in PF2E as each kind of operates differently, but are very similar in theming. Also, they both fit very thematically with the consumption of alcohol so that kind of made them the obvious choice when I was considering conditions.
If you can identify a strong core theme, I think you're always going to have an easier time building out a creature. Once I identified the status effects, then it was all about giving the creature generators of that status effect and ways to play off of it or make it more effective. It also helps that a hangover is a reasonably relatable and easy to design around effect that we can experience in real life.

It's great getting to design some more urban creatures with this series. There's plenty of things that go bump in the night or that might be dwelling around the ale soaked floors of your local dive bar. We're excited to check all of them out and bring you some entertaining things to chuck at your players!
