May update! Q&A

Hey everyone!

Hope you're all doing well.

Please excuse the lack of content so far this month. my EDC set has absolutely taken over my life. Its the most amount of time and effort and money ive put into a set and it has consumed a ridiculous amount of my time over the past month and a half haha. But in turn, it is going to be unreal, i am very excited for it!

Things will be back to our usual schedule shortly! In the mean time. Would you guys be down to do a Q&A? Is so, throw your questions in the comment section below and ill do a video answering them before the end of the month!

Love and appreciate you guys and thank you for understanding!!

Second the VJ/show setup question, I think better put is if one of us sprouts ends up in a situation being invited to play a big stage, how does the preparation side evolve? Like what did you actually have to do to get ready for EDC beyond putting a set together? And how does one build THAT kind of infrastructure. And out of curiosity, what stage rigging did they (at edc) make you pay for to have access to? Thanks in advance.

hoping im allowed to sneak in another question 👀 just finished watching your edc set. amazing shit. was wondering if you could shed light on the vj process. when playing so many different venues and variating the sets, do you have go to vj on your team working on the visuals? or do you have to collaborate with the festival/venue on the visuals for each show? do most your shows involve a rehearsal to test visuals?

Would you ever consider uploading the twitch streams you did during Covid? Those were amazing and I would love to rewatch them especially the voice in the machine walkthrough.

Kyle Pettit

Do you usually mix while producing or write the song first, and then mix afterwards?

Alex Vong

Do you produce music with the master chain on?(Including the chains that are on the Mix A, and Mix B tracks)

Dreamit

When you first started seriously pursuing a career as an electronic artist / touring DJ, who are some of the people you'd say helped contribute to your early successes (whether it be other artists, music industry folks, etc.)?

Jon Jen

I'm a high school student in Japan and I'm worried about my future. I want to become a music producer like you in the future. So I am thinking of going to a music school or studying abroad. But I am not sure if I will be successful as a music producer. Some people say that I should go to college first to get an educational background and earn steady money. If you were me, what would you do? I would also like to know what you did to become a music producer.

What's your best advice on creating a full sound without use of layering? Been listening to Mitosis w Deathpact and the sound design in the drop just sounds like a single source rather than stuff stacked. Having trouble using one source but keeping things sounding full. Excited to see vids of the EDC set!

LEFTBLANK

What's your process for collaboration? How do you initiate collaborations with artists like Rezz, Slander, Illenium, BTSM, etc. How do those relationships start? What's the best practices once you start collaborating on a track with another artist?

Tyce Hoskins

What advice would you give to artists just starting out who want to transition from working a full time job to becoming a full time artist like yourself

3LUME

In a skrillex video, he claims all he needs to mix is ableton plugins, fabfilter pro q and pro L. Would you agree? If you could limit yourself with 5 mixing plugins that are 3rd party (this includes free plugins) which one would use choose?

KAUZII

When you first started producing music, what did you do? Did you dive straight into raw production? Did you do remixes and/or edits first? P.S so hyped to see you play on Sunday. I’m glad they don’t have you playing at 4 AM again LOL

Justin Rei Sanchez

Do you master differently for streaming services? If so, what do you do different?

Chauncy Lee

I love your versatility how you can produce multiple different genres. What advice would you give to someone who also wishes to do that?

JR

What are some things you do for when writing a melody for a melodic drop that connects with a vocal with verse/pre/chorus to make it more memorable? Any other good songwriting tips?

Jesse Carter

Whats the newest thing you’ve learned about yourself because of your career in music? And if you could tell your past self something to help what would it be?

Voyajer

i’d be curious if you have any tips for writing a track that you eventually want a vocalist on. i find that i get carried away and keep adding to a track before i send to a vocalist. After i get the vocals back, the track is so cluttered i can’t get the vocal to fit and have a tough time deciding what i should keep or get rid of to make room

Tyler Twitchell

What’s one of the single best mixing advice you were given that really upped your production?

Lucas Alcantara

If you were to start producing again today how would you start? Resources or tips and tricks

Benjamin Rhodes

I’d love just to hear your current opinion on the direction of edm. It feels like here in the states midtempo is on the decline, and a lot of big midtempo artists have abandoned the genre. Do you think this is because midtempo isn’t doing well live? Does it do well live at your sets?
