How To Put a DJ Set Together Pt.2

Part 2 is out! Here we dive into how to lay out your set in ableton. We really start building the set out here, seeing whats working and whats not, exactly how transitions work, if we need to edit or produce something to make it work better, exactly how long the set is and how to mould it to our needs.

This is a SUPER helpful resource to have and one that i use literally all the time. Its great to be able to have a streamlined process for this as this can be time consuming otherwise and therefore we may not use it to it fullest potential.

Hope this is helpful! Let me know what else you're struggling with in the comments!

How To Put a DJ Set Together Pt.2

How do you prevent it from clipping when you're layering build ups together if you're making a radio mix? If you have clip shifter on it would be fine but when you have nothing on the master chain wouldn't it start clipping? Also how do you do double drops in Ableton if you're making a dubstep mix? This is the hardest thing for me to figure out lol

Sorry i didnt see the rest of the Q! During the set im focusing on the performance/theatrics, and considering the speed of which some of these mixes have to take place, im still physically mixing quite often, getting ready for the next song etc. i dont use Sync so im still beatmatching in headphones as well. Also effects to a much lesser extent. Also gauging crowd reactions and the overall vibe.

Gotcha , I’m looking to make my own showcase mix soon so this was very helpful!

Hey!! Welcome :) glad it helped

Good Q! I usually either have a clipper (clip shifter) or just nothing. 90% it’s nothing. But I’ll run every track at unison (so 0). Which means you do need to EQ lows out when mixing otherwise the distortion will be too evident.

This video is great blanke! Question , what do you have for the master chain for mixes in ableton?

Hey there, ali here! I've been a listener of yours for quite some time, and it's been awesome to see how you have grown as an artist in even just a few short years. I'm stoked I found out you had a Patreon! This was an awesome part 2 segment--very helpful in explaining the 'how' behind conceptualizing your set and then actually fleshing it out. I also appreciate your experiential commentary on the use of 'white space', impacts, etc. from the audinece perspective. Thank you! My follow-up question (for reference I am at the very beginning of my production journey, so I'm sorry if my questions are a bit novice... lmao): - With your set laid out in live, what are you focusing on during your performance from a mixing standpoint, i.e. noise sweeps/fading, etc. ?
