New graphic showing the complete evolution of the Gunnery Sergeant rank insignia. The rank originated during the Spanish-American War as a key member of ship's detachments acting as technical experts in naval gunnery and ordnance. By the end of the war, the Gunnery Sergeant was the highest paid NCO in the USMC, even when compared to the Sergeant Major. The insignia and role of the Gunnery Sergeant evolved over time, and now in infantry units they mainly act as company operations chiefs and platoon sergeants for weapons platoons.
Video coming out the week of 6-8 August will be on this topic.
