Fulfilling a request this week! The scenario laid out was:
"The empire is losing a battle against a barbarian tribe and they are low morale. The area is an artic tundra. The camp has plenty of wounded soldiers, they are low in supplies/ food."
To be quite honest, I thought this was going to be a tough piece to write. But it actually came together fairly easy. I laid down the chord progression first, starting on a minor chord and just descending to really set the tone. Then the whole middle section (which is my favorite part) fell into place almost immediately. The ending section is what I spent the most time on, trying to get the dynamics right.
The thing I like is that while the piece is mostly sad and melancholy, there are glimmers of hope sprinkled throughout, like the resolution to a major chord around 49sec, or the change around 1:33. These little moments are for the soldiers who, even in the face of certain defeat, hold on to the hope that they will return home one day and see their wife and kid again.
