For episode one of this three-part series we take a closer look into the work that's required before the work. That is, the examination and testing process come into focus and we start to see a painting from the conservator's perspective. By using a series of tools and approaches we can start to discover facts about this painting that will lay the foundation for the work that's required to conserve it. A necessary but often hidden part of the conservation process this may in fact be the most important part of any project for it is here that we begin to truly learn about the work.
