Here's a giant spoiler-free rundown of the servants: Saber - King Arthur, the legendary king of Britain who led the round table of knights in defending it against the invasion of the Saxons. There have been so many legends and re-interpretations that no one is really sure what is true or if Arthur even existed, but his legend has been extremely popular for centuries. The Lady of the Water is one of many figures that appears in his stories and is actually the person who gives him Excalibur. The sword he pulls from the stone is a different sword called Caliburn that was destroyed. Rider - He's very focused in the show and isn't shy about talking about who he is so there isn't a lot more to add. He's the famous and very real Alexander the Great who conquered a large chunk of the world. Berserker - Can't really say much about him as it would be spoiler. He's insane and out of control, but Kariya can control him somewhat and sort of aim his madness at a person. Kariya usually does this to make him attack Archer/Gilgamesh because he hates his master Tokiomi Tohsaka. An important detail is that in the first fight Berserker actually breaks Kariya's control and goes directly for Saber/Arthur, ignoring Rider/Alexander and Lancer/Diarmud. So he goes after Archer because of Kariya, but he goes after Saber for a different reason. Lancer - Diarmuid of the Love Spot, he is a legendary person from Irish mythology that is not real. His story is real mythology though and it's presented accurately in the show. He was blessed with a mole that enchanted women and was a loyal friend to another great warrior Fionn. Fionn decided to marry Grainne, a princess of Ireland, but Grainne became enchanted by Diarmuid. She drugged everyone at their wedding and demanded that Diarmuid run away with her, and though Diarmuid refused she used her status to make him agree or lose his honor as a knight. Diarmuid chose to betray his friend in order to preserve his honor as a knight, and ran away with the princess. They spent years on the run until Fionn declared his forgiveness and welcomed them back, but in reality he still hated Diarmuid and eventually left Diarmuid to die after being wounded during a hunt. In Fate he just wants to preserve his honor, but his enchanted mole often puts him in situations that makes it difficult. Assassin - Hassan-i Sabbah is a real person from history, but this one is a bit complicated. Hassan was an Islamic leader that founded the Order of Assassins that used new and special tactics, instead of amassing armies and invading rival lands like most people they would secretly kill their rival leaders directly. In a time of soldiers and knights they created the formal idea of a professional assassin. In the Fate universe, other top assassins of his order take on the name of Hassan, so it's important to note that the assassin in Fate/Zero is a successor to the original Hassan but she is not actually him. Her appearing as several assassins is because she has multiple personality disorder, and also a homage to Hassan's order that was made up of many assassins. The female assassin with long purple hair that you often see is her actual body, the others are projections of her other personalities. Archer - Gilgamesh was a very, very ancient Sumerian king that ruled one of the very first human cities when most of humanity were still in tribes. The Epic of Gilgamesh tells about him and is one of the oldest written stories of mankind, and it says that while his father was the previous king that his mother was a goddess -- making him a demigod. He was probably a real person, but details about him are likely exaggerated. The Fate universe builds off of this and Gilgamesh is basically the first true king of mankind that took them from cavemen to civilization. This is why he is considered the King of Heroes and he has an infinite treasury, because he was the beginning of civilized man. All heroes were inspired from him at least indirectly, and all treasures were either inspired from his own or stolen from him. He's the closest thing to a god that walks the Earth and in his eyes all of mankind owes everything to him. Caster - Gilles de Raise, who was a real French knight in history and a wealthy lord that ruled over a land. He used his wealth to abduct children from his land and do very awful things to them for years without anyone knowing. He had a dispute with other influential figures that caused an investigation into him, which happened to uncover all of his crimes. This is why Caster argues that there is no God, because he was only caught due to a petty dispute and without that he would have continued committing evil without punishment. During his time as a knight he was also an actual comrade of the famous Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc in French) who looks like Saber in the Fate universe, which is why Caster is obsessed with her. Bluebeard is a popular legend about an evil nobleman that uses his power to kill people, and many think the legend was inspired by Gilles de Raise.
