About the monster comments, yes, I think that it was all about his personality and that people thought him weird and equated that to being a monster. About Ushijima, I do think he wanted to be a good volleyball player (like the guy his father looked up to) for his father, it's implied that he was raised by his mother's family completely, but his father seemed like a good guy who was bullied out of his son's life.
