As for the part about the millionaire, I think he was trying to use it as an example to say that people who pursue worldly goals will never be happy because there's almost always going to be someone out there who got further up the totem pole than you did. So in the case of the guy pursuing the 'American Dream' of being a millionaire, he makes it, then sees someone who's made a billion dollars and is unhappy because he didn't reach the 'perfection' of bliss that worshiping a god supposedly gives you. I don't think it was meant to imply that everyone judges their happiness by how much money they have. Of course, that immediately brings up the question of 'well what about the guy who /is/ on top?' Did he achieve the same level of bliss as a worshiper because he achieved 'perfection'? Also, as you pointed out, it's a pretty nasty thing to try and convince someone that their achievements are worthless because they'll never measure up to some impossible standard.

I always thought Hinduism was relatively benign as far as religions go but that sounds like the kind of shit that the cults that still pop up from time to time in the US preach. Separate people from their families, convince them only the cult leader matters and their word is law, that sort of thing. I suppose it's less directly violent than Islam but I'm only making that assumption because I've never heard of a Hindu terrorist attack. Maybe they're really nasty to outsiders in India, I dunno.
