one of the fundamental flaws of western storytelling is a persistent belief in the need for a self contained arc. what i mean everything in the conventional story exists in a bubble. i believe this makes for a very predictable and boring story. though it is fun to ruin movies for everyone by calling out dialogue as it happens. 🙃
for my own part i've never been fussed about zingers and punchlines or other conventions in comics. i'm more interested in characters guiding a story to a natural conclusion. there is still a challenge in that i'm working with less than a hundred words and three or four abstracted images. i dunno, i just don't think storytellers are challenging themselves enough and giving in to wish fulfillment.
