"Why Does Anything Matter?"

If you don't believe in God, or an afterlife, then you've probably been asked this: "Why does anything matter?" Just a little thought reveals the utter absurdity of such a question. The flaw is temporal. Why must all value be placed upon the future? Does the present not hold value? When something is unlimited, does it not actually lose value? We matter to each other. I don't care about a trillion years from now, when humanity is long gone. I care about the here and now, and the immediate future. Just because it ends, it doesn't mean that it is without meaning; in fact, I'd say that makes it matter more.
