FF7R Is NOT A Remake (April 2020 Update)

I'm in the camp that thinks the story can work even with the ending of part 1, but that we have no reason to trust the writers to pull it off. Stories with time travel/alternate realities etc can definitely work on an emotional level - as it gives characters an opportunity to explore other possibilities or the power to change reality but in a way that ultimately leads them to accept and understand the reality they're in (and the reality they're in usually involves a loved one that has died). Examples in recent (film) history include - Inception, Arrival (though not a strict time travel movie), About Time (which has ridiculous time travel mechanics but worked for a lot of people emotionally). In each of these cases the time/reality bending device is used to allow the characters to come to the terms with the fact that someone has died. So at least in principle, this could all be leading up to Aeris dying but us getting there in a different, but also emotionally impactful manner (while subverting the fanboy plea for her to survive or be brought back - a big part of real life is we can't bring back the dead). That said with the various story, character and even musical gaffes that I've seen in the game so far, I very much doubt that's what's going to happen.

I am in agreement with you Spenser. The game as alot of care put into maintaining the originals spirit and the dialogue is pretty strong, as for the ending it all rides on the execution of the future games. Hopefully Nomura doesn't jump the shark and uses this opportunity to evolve the story of FF7 in a way that is fitting and well written. As for now I am highly satisfied and look forward to see what they do.

I would say it is a faithful remake until the very end of the game. The end of the game I think is going to be very divisive for fans. I feel kind of mixed on the ending, but I am interested to see where they take it from here. That being said, this is the best game that square has made in years and there is so much good stuff in there. The heart of FFVII is still there. They got all the characters right and the dialogue is actually good which really surprised me. Some of the characters are even expanded from the original so they are more fleshed out. For example, Aerith in my opinion, is a much stronger character in this game. Also, the combat is fantastic, and I think Square finally nailed that action/turn based battle system they have been aiming for all this time. Just go into it with an open mind and I think you'll have a lot of fun and find a lot to enjoy about it. FFVII is one of my favorite games ever and playing through this was a very surreal experience. I absolutely loved it.

I was actually going to do an in-depth review of this but I’m going to wait for your video Mike! I had this planned as my first twitch stream and I’m very sad I didn’t do it now but for all of the wrong reasons . This game further highlights new media corruption. It highlights I believe issues regarding access to games furthermore at least for me it goes to the heart of whether reviews are by nature subjective or whether taste in something not unlike judgement can be completely wrong.

I may be in the minority here but I LOVE this game. I've loved everything about it so far (haven't completely finished yet). I think the characters were brought to life really well, the music is great, the story is there. And this is my favorite series of all time, I've played the original through several times. I agree with Mike's statement that it's not a "remake" because the story does change. But also, what good is just making the same game exactly as it was? The key scenes I wanted to see are there so I'm having a blast.

I still havent finished the game im only up to the bit where u change cloud into a girl , not to mention i had this game early cause it got released in Aus a week early but ive just been playing it here and there So when i saw this update i was thinking how could u know so certainly it was not a faithful remake especially when u said u were only downloading it at the time of this video but then today i saw some comments ubove and it intrigued me then i realised u know people that had the early release and now i understand this video 100 percent as even though i havent finished it , curiosity got the best of me so i watched spoilers and man all i can say im so disappointed to the point of i dunno if i even wanna finish playing it .. cant believe they going this route so now im even more pumped for ur video cause the info i know u gonna say needs to be said Anyway thats my little ramble have a good one man

To me, i'm enjoying the game as is even though i only got 5 hours in before my PS4 crapped out. I got a new one today and will be starting again but i agree that the story just has a different feel. I don't wanna spoil anything but people and new things show up very early and i'm like this is Nomura and KH rearing itself into this game. I like the fleshed out character moments but i'm really worried about the ending. Looking forward to your video. Hopefully i finish it before it comes out but i am totally agreeing with you that there is something lacking from the original in this game. I'm having fun and it's a good game but it is definitely not a remake.

go for it. Too many of the snippets of articles and videos I've seen haven't really addressed many criticisms of the game. There needs to be some more differing voices for this game. I haven't played it it, myself. I told amazon to take their time to ship me the copy.

Really looking forward to what you have to say. I have to be completely honest and say that the remake has really surprised me. I came in thinking that it was going to be upsetting/disappointing and have really enjoyed my experience thus far. Not sure exactly how far I am, but currently in chapter 9 in the wall market section. The story has some issues from my perspective, but I am really in love with the gameplay. I am actually willing to go so far as to say this is one of the best blends of gameplay, systems, and accessibility that I have seen in an RPG, reminding me of a more streamlined and simpler version of Dragon Age: Origins, which I really enjoyed. While it does not captivate me like the original did, I am glad that it exists, and that the sources material is still in tact and can go back at anytime. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to your thoughts. -Cody

I personally love both the original and the "Remake". The original Final Fantasy VII is timeless, clearly - it's my favorite game of all time. It quite literally changed my life, as far as storytelling and video games are concerned. That said, the "Remake" expands upon certain characters' personalities that make them either more endearing or more loathsome (depends on one's perspective, I suppose). The "Remake" also expands on the world building aspect significantly than the original did. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to one's interpretation or perspective. We also get to traverse around most of Midgar, a section of the game that originally took, at most, 4 hours to complete. A minor point, but still worth mentioning. Currently, I'm in chapter 13 of the game. I can tell you that I managed to feel the same emotions I did when I first played the original. I even cried at some parts. While I do think there are some issues/errors in "Remake" (such as the inclusion of Roche), it doesn't necessarily make it a bad game. But perhaps I missed something. Perhaps the much ballyhooed ending, which I have yet to see and refuse to watch spoilers, may change my opinion on this game. All I can say is that I look forward to your video elaborating on your position. Peace, and stay safe.
