During my first read through of the incal i found it quite overwhelming and hard to follow. However reading it a second time it is so much more clearer and enjoyable. The imagination on every page is incredible. So glad thanks to this book club I am revisiting it! It’s interesting how technology is depicted as a force for evil in this section. You have the bad guys in the technocity city at the beginning and towards the end we see the president get rid of his human body and turn into a murderous robot. What do you think jodorowsky is getting at? Is he saying that over reliance on technology corrupts our humanity? Perhaps technology is symbolic of material reality/ science/ rational thinking and a rejection of the spiritual/ irrational? What are your thoughts?
2022-05-08 11:26:24 +0000 UTCI do love the little bits of untranslated text, the accute accents on some of the Ové-s and DiFool's bold "NON!" as he's about to be cut open, and the "GROBOUM" sound as the fortress crashes (big boom... one could use big bada boom). One thing I notice when talking about the Emperoress, is the use of double gendered pronouns, i.e. "he/she" rather than a singular or even plural "they". This may be partially from the translation (French has no gender neutral third person, well, nothing yet officially recognized), but also because we are dealing with something that is both gender poles rather than neither or just in-between. All this to say, what are your thoughts on the concepts of gender in The Incal, and how they relate to today's expanded notion that is more spectrum like than a binary duality?
