There's something really tragic about this whole situation that's beautiful. I think Netero deep down would love to sit down with Meruem and talk but he's been put in a impossible position. Maybe if he did sit down with Meruem there could be some resolution. We have already seen just how much Meruem has changed in such a short period of time, and how willing he is to question what he thinks and himself. Honestly, even though he probably has a primitive drive to rule and conquer he has pretty much ignore all stuff whenever possible. The tragedy is that this situation won't allow for that. Netero cannot waver, because the implication is that Meruem is far stronger. If he has doubts/isn't fighting to kill he has basically no chance.

2019-08-06 19:11:46 +0000 UTCAnd this concept is also used during the Gon v Genthru fight since if they kill each other the cards disappear. Pretty cool thematic consistency. Also is pretty smart of Netero to give himself a handicap. Meruem cannot kill him if he wants to learn his name.

2019-08-06 18:37:34 +0000 UTCOne thing I didn't even realize until now (and this is like my 6th or so watch through of HxH) is that the fight Meruem and Netero end up in is similar to that of the tournament in the Hunter Exam arc that Netero makes where they have to fight but the other person must admit defeat, no killing allowed, no other way to win.

But also Netero has experience, so he knows you can't just let a God level creature just roam around lol. Also fun fact. For this whole segment Netero is voiced by different actor. Creators wanted very specific tone and approach for this whole fight
