2017-08: $B Lollapalooza Snapchat Story

Iconic day/weekend. During the Migos performance, Quavo/Takeoff kept saying "IF YOU LOVE YO MOMMA, SAY MOMMA!!" and the crowd (including me) shouted "Momma!". I assumed it represented a unanimous love for our mothers, but I know some people who didn't love their mom might've participated in order to honor their Migo overlords (Rest in peace Takeoff). All that to say, it was intriguing crowd work that I remember to this day.

Handful of iconic photos from this day, but most noteworthy the famous $B @ LOLLAPALOOZA video. It was a miracle really because I just had surgery on my left/dominant hand and got put in a cast 18 hours before my flight left to Chicago. They told me it was a bad idea to fly, but I literally didn't have a choice and it didn't end up being a problem (to my knowledge). I was amped to be shooting Lolla, but I was so nervous having to shoot the whole show with only one functioning hand. It ended up working out (clearly) and it ended up sparking the idea of "well maybe I could shoot 1 handed if I needed to" and nowadays I often prefer it! It can be sketchy, but I feel comfortable enough within my technique to implement it now, WAYYY more than I did back then.

If you've seen me shooting at a show there's a 50/50 chance you've seen this in action lol. I'm sure it looks weird to people, and I'll admit it doesn't work out sometimes, but it really works when it does, in a way that keeps things fresh and creatively satisfying. It's definitely a technique that works better for some artists/music styles more than others. For example, when I shot video for the Post Malone tour last year, 90% of that I did with 2 hands, so it's circumstantial. But I'm often surprised how situations that seem super limiting in the moment, can lead me to interesting places I might not've ventured into on my own.
