had the same issue: try to erase kindleforge and the reinstall it but in two times - 1) the folder in documents, then 2 the sh. scrip in documents too. Then try to launch kindleforge again. (FAQ said : BOTH the folder AND scriptlet MUST be in the documents folder on your Kindle!)(you just have to do it in 2 times), hope it will helps

You will also need to add credit card (again, use fake testing cards found on mastercard site) and then you can enable ads.

I was literally trying to do this last night and your video pops up! I'm a bit frustrated though, as I follow all the steps up until I press an ad and then nothing happens.... I'm not sure what I could do. I have a paperwhite 10th gen and running 5.18.1 so my understanding is this should work. EDIT: I managed to get up to the bang! message, but after showing it loading it gives me an error in launching the app EDIT OF THE EDIT: I think I did it!! I just continued as normal after the error and it did actually install it. Again, thank you so much for the update, the video helps a lot to follow all the steps that weren't as clear on the wiki

For those people with Kindles Paperwite SIGNATURE EDITION, first of all, you can sign up for offers in amazon page, but if you are outside US (i did it from Mexico), you have to add a credit/debit card from the US (I got one thanks to a very close friend) & add an adress with made up information, all of this ussing an US VPN, so only with all of this, i fixed the "something went wrong error" in the sign up for offers page [sorry for bad english].

I can't even seem to get started with the process as when I connect my Kindle Touch, firmware 5.3.7.3, my Macbook (Catelina, 10.15.7) doesn't recognize it. Ok, sure, what about the Send to Kindle app? Downloaded, installed, works perfectly for letting me sign in with an account, but the USB File Manager simply... doesn't open. Completely, doesn't work. Doesn't matter whether I'm signed in or not, clicking the button does absolutely nothing. Is there any other way to see the filesystem??? Is my Macbook just too old, so somehow the USB File Manager doesn't work and I'm screwed?

I am having a unique issue. I have only seen 2 other people have it with no solution as of yet. I run the adbreak but after 'bang' I get "Application Error". no clue why, I am running 5.18.3 update Read the written guide as well, as Jeff stated facepalm they tell you to ignore application error and run hotfix. I have a Kindle Paperwhite 10th Gen. I followed all the steps. After prepping my own .assets folder and replacing the .assets folder on the Kindle, I try to load an ad, it shows "Version number is: 432033" with one option to Close. I tap that and then it asks me to turn Airplane Mode off. If I say no, it fails. If I say yes, it connects to WiFi and still fails. I cannot have Airplane Mode on and WiFi on simultaneously. My firmware is 5.17.1 (4320330039) and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Try factory resetting the thing zing out of all kids things and signing in with an adult account.im pretty sure it forces you into a kids account with initial setup but the if you factory reset it and resign in you can opt out and make it a normal kindle I could be wrong

I can't figure out whether or not WinterBreak is compatible with my Kindle's firmware (5.18.4.0.1). In your YouTube post you said that ALL firmwares are now able to be jailbroken but you didn't specify HOW. My Kindle CANNOT enable the ad feature (and yes I tried to make an american amazon account) so I can't utilize AdBreak. And there is no info on GitHub or the org site regarding firmware compatibilities. PLEASE clarify if my Kindle can be modded or not and HOW I would have to go about that. Love what you're doing btw and I hope that my frustration with this problem doesn't get interpreted as frustration with you or your channel! As a non tech savvy person, I was able to jailbreak it after hours of troubleshooting. Thanks to Jeff, kindlemodding, google and everyone in the comment section. I like to share what I’ve encountered and how to fix it. My kindle version is 5.18.2 and I use a MacBook Air 13 ver 10.12.6 (very old) and it cannot update anymore. I couldn’t even download “send-to-kindle” app in the tutorial. I found out you can use the original usb cable that came with the kindle to connect with the Mac. Zip files to inflate kindle: -I have 13 gb and the options are 8 or 16gb. I chose the 16gb option and calculated how many gb files to move (download) into the kindle so I don’t go over the space limit. The file has the name gb or mb. -system > .assets if it does not appear in the kindle file when connected to the Mac. Hit CMD, Shift , Period. -Open Terminal does not appear when right clicking: Go to system settings> keyboard> shortcuts> services to turn on “new terminal at folder”. You can now right click the file and go to services and it’s there. -Terminal code copied and pasted but it popped out a bunch of error messages instead of the one line in the tutorial. It was because I put all the files in the assets folder and I didn’t select the file “assets” to terminal code it. (I know I’m stupid lol) -mrpi and Kual-had a lot of trouble with this one. (1) For MRPI, a pop up said my zip extractor doesn’t work but when I right clicked, select “open with…” I found another option to unzip it. (My pov so I don’t know if this helps) (2) KUAL book doesn’t appear on kindle after typing in ;log mrpi —- kindlemodding said to select the file kual*installation.bin but I couldn’t find it, the file only say repackage instead of install. Got so confused and thought it was because of the file, that’s why it’s not working. But NO. Make sure you deleted all the extra files you downloaded into your kindle. That would create space for the kindle to install Kual. I thought I deleted it but the system created a folder called .trash that was hidden. Remember to use CMD, Shift, Period (.) I have to permanently delete them from my kindle. So that’s what I learned and I hope this helps.

I've been using koreader for a few days now, (thanks again for the guide, Jeff and everyone else as well for sharing their tips and tricks to figure out the snags during the process! Y'all are absolute godsends, especially post 5.18.x update c:) and I wanted to take the chance to share a few things I ran into while playing around with the app and the fixes that helped (and to hopefully help y'all avoid the tedium of combing through multiple sites and trial and error lol) [CUSTOM SCREENSAVER] I assume this is a big one for a lot of people who want to further de-amazon their kindles. Depending on the build you're using (I got my info from the koreader github—you want to download the "KindleHF" build, since that's what's applicable to devices with a firmware greater/beyond 5.16.3), you might need to download one more special book (wink wink) to access the "Screen" option on koreader and get to the custom lock screens. On its own, without this scriptlet, you won't be able to access the option at all on koreader. I'm not an expert on the technicalities of the jailbreak at all. To the best of my understanding, even if the device is jailbroken, there's still something with the ad assets folder that persists and cannot be overridden by koreader alone, hence the need for the scriptlet to completely remove it from the kindle. The "special book" and the method to get the screensaver enabled is the one that Jeff featured in his original jailbreak video! I'm not sure if direct links can be posted here, so just remove the parentheses: https (://) scriptlets (.) notmarek (.) com . Download the "Disable Ads" scriptlet, which should give you a file titled "disable_ads.sh". Plug in your kindle to your computer and drag this file to the documents folder. Once your kindle starts up, it should appear as a new book, exactly as in the original video. Let it run, and ta da! You're one step closer to getting your custom lockscreen! Take note: you can't be on koreader when you're connecting the kindle to your computer. You need to be on the stock OS, so exit the app first before sideloading anything. You can't just drag and drop your selected images in a new folder in the root of the kindle's storage. Koreader wouldn't be able to detect it otherwise. Once you have your images prepared, plug in your kindle. Look for the "koreader" folder, then select the "data" folder. Within the "data" folder, make a new folder named "screensaver". It has to be in lowercase. Once the folder's made, you can now drag and drop your images into this new screensaver folder, and yay! We're getting close to the finish line now! Unmount your kindle, and load up koreader again. A quick aside regarding lockscreens: ensure they're fit for your model! I suggest going to ebookscreensaver (.) com to check for the dimensions that'll best fit your device. You can also make and download your screen saver from here, but it can't do transparent screensavers. If you're just using a regular image, jpg works fine, but if you want it to be transparent, it HAS to be a png. There are a bunch of really nice pngs that are available on the kindle modding discord, but if you want one that's completely your own, there are a few online tools you can use to help you make a transparent image that follow the dimensions of your screen. My vote goes to Photopea since it's the closest to the Photoshop UI and grants you more flexibility, but Canva is also a beginner-friendly editor! I'm just not sure if you can use and download transparent pictures on a non-premium account. Once you open koreader, go to the gear icon. This time, if the script ran properly, you should be able to see a clickable option for "Screen". From here, go "Sleep screen" --> "Wallpaper ", and you should see the options for all the sorts of things you can display on your lock screen. If you only want to display your currently read book, select "Show book cover on sleep screen" and call it a day. Otherwise, select "Show custom image or cover on sleep screen." On the same dropdown menu, select "Custom images" --> "Choose image or document cover". A popup should now appear asking you to choose a file. Navigate through the file browser by going "data" --> "screensaver". You should now see your images. Long press on your image of choice, select "choose" on the pop up screen, and once you click the sleep button you officially have a custom lock screen! c: A couple things you might want to tweak with the sleep screen: 1: If using a transparent background: Screen --> Sleep screen --> Wallpaper --> Border fill, rotation and fit From the border fill option, select "no fill" to get the full effect c: 1.5: Remove 'sleeping' message when device is on sleep Screen --> Sleep screen --> Sleep screen message --> Untick 'Add custom message to sleep screen' 2: To control how long your lock screen is displayed: Screen --> Sleep screen --> Wallpaper --> Postpone screen update after wake up You'll be given options from there to select the duration of how long the lock screen will persist until the device is unlocked. To keep consistent with how the stock system worked for an unlock, go with "Until a tap". [PAGE TURNING GESTURES] One thing I'm honestly not the biggest fan of with how koreader works out of the box is needing to tap the page to turn it forward and back. It's a minor inconvenience, I can admit as much, but swiping feels more natural for me. This is configurable only when you're inside a book. Otherwise, you won't be able to see that option. Once you've loaded up a book, swipe from the top to access the settings menu. Select the gear icon then go to "Taps and gestures" --> "Page turns". From here, you should now have the option to select between taps and swipes. You can have both activated at once if you like. [STYLE TWEAKS] Another thing I'm not the biggest fan of with koreader right out the box: the way it displays traditional books. That was the first thing I edited once I sideloaded all my books into my kindle as epubs, I'm not going to lie HAHAHA Epubs are the best way to go, since mobi support is... pretty horrendous on koreader lmao. This was another thing I learned the hard way—I use Calibre to manage my library, and before the jailbreak, that meant all my books were converted to mobi so I could access them. After sorting my library out again and ensuring everything was an epub file, the magic of koreader finally came through. On the bottom menu (again, while inside a book), you'll notice three vertical dots at the rightmost side of a number of editable options. Click those three dots, and a pop-up will appear on your screen. Once you've found the settings you like, click the "Set as default" option, and confirm. You can take advantage of the fact that you can carry over the tweaks you made on one book and have it be the default settings for all books you'll open from that point on. You may need to make edits if the tweak you made as the default doesn't quite look right on another book, but these edits will not suddenly become the default unless you set it as that. They will only apply to the new book you've made that tweak to. Honestly though, I only really needed to make very minor edits on a handful of books. Once you've found the configuration that looks best for you, set it as the default, and you're pretty much good to go and let koreader do the rest. [SETTING BOOKS FOLDER AS MAIN PAGE] As explained in the original jailbreak video, koreader acts as a file browser. Just for simplicity's sake (or, if for any reason you want to go back to the stock kindle OS and not want to navigate your way through your pages) long press on the folder where you placed all your books, and on the pop up that shows up, select "Set as HOME folder". Your books folder will now be recognized by koreader as your homescreen, so to say. When you click on the upper left home icon, it should now bring you straight to all your books! If you're like me and you liked the collections feature on the stock OS, you can use sub-folders within your main books folder as a collections stand-in to organize your library. It won't mess up the way koreader works at all. Your books will be inside the sub-folders, or however you organized them, and koreader will have no problems opening them at all. [RAKUYOMI] This one is going to be short and sweet: do not use more than two or three sources to avoid errors when trying to access chapters. Since I have a larger manga library, two sources was my sweet spot. The most reliable and updated were MangaPill and Bato.to. It can still search for the English counterpart of the titles, but I found that it gave more options if you type in the Romaji instead. And that's it! I really didn't expect it would be this long lol, but hopefully this helps someone out c: If you have any questions or want to clarify anything, I'll be more than glad to help in any way I can. FWIW: my friend and I both have succesfully jailbroken our Kindle thanks to this guide by Jeff. Our (EU) Kindle model was Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation) / PW5, with mine still running firmware version 5.18.3, and theirs 5.18.5.0.1. Both jailbreak processes went smoothly and succeeded at once. The only thing we had to do extra (and as other comments have mentioned) was to set our Kindle device location/region to US through Amazon to enable the ads (before following the guide). After we finished the jailbreak, we set the devices' location back to our original EU country to remove the ads again. Also, on Windows (10 and 11), the Kindle's "system"/.assets folder might now show up in the file explorer, to fix it (credits to Astrophel): (1) In File Explorer, navigate (in the top bar) to " View > Options > Change folder and search options" (2) Within the options window, navigate to the "View" tab, and UNcheck "hide protected operating system files (recommended)", and check/select "show hidden files folders and drives". (3) Hit "apply" and the systems folder should show up :)

Hi! I had the exact same issue too. Don't use the default windows file explorer to unzip and extract the file. There's probably something with the way windows extracts the files that causes that error message and doesn't copy the folders over properly. Accidentally updated my firmware to 5.18.5.0.1. Good news is I was still able to jailbreak my device. (It took me a couple of tries, don't know what exactly I was doing wrong but I followed the guide along with the video.) A few notes. People below mentioned they were having issues with the .assets part. One user mentioned running the "replace" file while it's IN the kindle worked for them. That didn't work for me. I did it as it said on the guide and video. Maybe it was an issue with turning ads on and not turning airplane mode on at the right time. (I have the signature edition so I needed to enable ads from the website) Others have also mentioned that the rename file isn't showing up for them. Double check to make sure you don't have the folder within a folder. Depending on how you extract the zip file (speaking for windows) it creates a file named "renameotabin" and within it was another file of the same name which is the one you want to copy to your Kindle. That's the one with all the good stuff. I didn't double check it at first, go to Kindle, option wasn't there, fix the file, option was there and able to run the rename file. Hopefully this can help some others

did you get the Mesquito file and the KUAl book? For me those are not working. After opening the ads I got 'application error' and never got the mesquito book. Did install hotfix which gave me a book, but then doin mrpi and dual it doesn't give me a book and if I search the log mrpi thing it doesn't do anything, neither when I leave it on screen nor when I press search, not quite sure where I'm going wrong

Yeah, just make a folder called "Fillers", download the 8GB file and move over the corresponding files they are titled "fill_8gb_1gb_1", fill_8gb_1gb_2" the 1gb_1,2,3, etc is the value, so just add the value that you need to fill up your storage and you are good to go!

On Windows, after adding the bat file and clicking on it while it is in .assets, I unplug the kindle, click on an add, it gives me the first pop up with the version number, then instead of a second pop up like yours, it asks me if I want to exit airplane mode. I say no, and the screen remains blank, no "bang" popup or any others.

I'm not even able to enable ADs, i am able to get to the page and press "Sign up for offers" but then i get a error message "something went wrong, try again later", tried different browsers and mobile, do i need to turn off airplane mode for this to work or do anyone know how to get this enabled? (if it matters its for a paid down kindle 32gb 12th gen signature ed with no ads.) ah nice, tried to turn off airplane mode and do a restart to see if that could fix it to update the ad connection, but then it ran a update and got through even tho i had only a few 100 mb left. well no JB for me this time either.

Hi, I am unable to get the ads to appear on my Kindle. I live in Ireland, after a quick AI query, it seems as though ads generally do not appear on devices in Ireland or other smaller regions, regardless of whether ads are enabled in the device settings on your Amazon account. i had that issue, when he says double click to add the Extensions and Mrpackage folders instead use winrar or 7zip extract them twice from the first and second zip then add them to root folder and add rename to bin, hope this helps

When trying to install Kual, I get a message saying the Update_KUALBooklet_HDRepack.bin package failed to be installed, then it destroys the package. I should have plenty of storage (over 10gb free). I have an 11th gen basic with firmware version 5.18.5.0.1 and my computer is on Windows 10.

in your file explorer, try going to View > Options > Change Folder and Search Options > View > then made sure that "show hidden files folders and drives" is selected under hidden files and folders, and "hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is NOT checked. >then hit apply. I have a Paperwhite 11th generation and using a Macbook Air 2020. I've kept it on airplane mode since the initial video came out and my Kindle was updated. Here's some troubleshooting for stuff I ran into (I am neither a Kindle expert nor a Mac expert so some of this may be very dumb) https://www.amazon.com/sendtokindle/mac - make a "Kindle Stuff" folder in advance - if USB file manager isn't connecting to your Kindle, just log in to the Send to Kindle app - continuously check for that update file in your Finder as you go through the steps. Mine popped up later on - if the assets folder isn't appearing for you to drag into your Kindle Stuff folder, hit CMD, Shift, Period (.) to show hidden folders. You should be able to drag it over. - here's where to download the Jailbreak from the Wiki guide: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/kindle-models - You must click on Finder, then View to find Show Path Bar - here's what you paste in the terminal: find . -name 'details.html' -exec cp -f adbreak.html {} \; - if you get an error in the Terminal, check that you actually dragged the files into the Kindle Stuff folder - Plug back in to set up the Hotfix. (Mac only | Filler files still taking up space after being deleted) If anyone has having an issue where your Kindle's storage was still full after having deleted the files using Finder/SendToKindle I have a fix. With your Kindle still connected and with Finder/Kindle OR Send To Kindle still open, delete the filler files you added in the beginning of the tutorial (doesn't have to be when Jeff says, I did this at the very end of video, after successfully installing Kual, etc.) and then two-finger click/'right click' on Trash in your dock and empty it. Essentially you need to empty your Mac's trash with your Kindle still connected to it in order for your Kindle to recognize that the files you've deleted off of it are now infact deleted. Idk why it's like that but thought I could save someone else from going down that 45 min rabbit hole : ) Thanks Jeff!!

Have you changed your internal settings? On the discord it said to change your entire region to USA and add a valid address and creditcard info (basically as if you moved to the USA). What I did is I just picked a random address I would remember (my favourite zoo/ish) and got a prepaid creditcard that works in the USA. Not sure if that will fix the issue for you but I hope it does :)

I had the same problem. Try running Hotfix (tap on the ebook in your library). After it does its thing try searching for ":log mrpi" again and it should work now. That did it for me.

Hi, after I unplugged the Kindle and selected an ad so the 'Bang!' can run, it only showed me the pop-up for the version number, and then gave me the pop-up to turn off airplane mode. When I clicked not to turn off airplane mode, it returned me to the selected ad screen with nothing but a tiny square under the back arrow. Do you know how to fix this?

Hi, the jailbreak worked great for me but I'm having trouble with some options not showing up like sleep screen and screen savers. I think it's because the kindle is still considered a kindle with ads and I'm worried that trying to disable it with a disable-ad scriplet might mess things up. I was able to figure out what went wrong for me (also based on the discord!) I got stuck on the KUAL step because I only "moved to trash" the filler data files from my kindle (am on mac). It's worth double checking in your device info that all the filler data files were deleted. I didn't realize that I had to empty my mac's trash bin for it to be truly removed from the device. After I did that, my kindle free storage went from 0.04GB to 12GB and I was able to install KUAL successfully.

Many thanks for this video! I have been long awaiting this as my first attempt to jailbreak! I was able to follow every step, but I havent been able to get the KUAL "book" to show up as the last step. I went back to check the locations of all my files, and it looks like the "Update_KUALBooklet_HDRepack" disappears from my mrpackages whenever I reconnect my kindle to computer.

If you're running into issues, updating to the newest software seems to work for a lot of people. The newest update is still jail breakable! But possibly not for long. If you need to update, update it now haha

I was having issues with the systems folder not showing, the mrpackages folder not moving over, and figuring out where to get the rename file and all of it is in there just follow the steps. Despite the video and the wiki, somehow none of the options work. Kindle 10th gen is 5.18.1, laptop is windows 10, and downloaded both methods of jailbreak. Finding .assets was quite the pain. then while trying adbreaker, i had to reset several times to restore ads, as when i tried to put .assets and the extracted files in one folder to enable replace, nothing had changed. And winterbreak files aren’t extracting, so no luck there, unfortunately. Still reviewing the video to see what little thing i could be missing, as you are thorough in your tutorial. Perhaps it’s just my luck.

On my amazon acc, the 'special offers' is active but on my kindle, there's no ads. No 'view my ads' section. Although the 'special offers' is active, I am unable to remove them at all. I bought this Kindle 10th gen 2nd hand. Does anyone face this problem & have any suggestions? Should I just factory reset?

Okay found it with a google search. But the ";log mrpi" thing wont work for me... I think its bc I had overwritten all the original files of the kindle with the winterbreak and kept them there as it was not working and i had spent hours into it. Is there anything else I can try?

The Internal Storage folder doesn't appear! I only have one drive named Kindle, where there are folders, but no Assets or anything similar to the ones in the video. I've already enabled viewing hidden files, in case you were wondering.

Hello, I'm from Brazil and unfortunately I don't have a phone number, address and payment method in USA or other country to enable ADS. So, I guess I'll have to wait for a new way to jailbreak my 10th generation Kindle version 5.18.1 :( But thanks for the video anyway! Could you include a link to a resource that’d explain how to use the filler script in more detail? (As someone who has never used GitHub before, I failed at this point because I couldn’t get downloading the filler file zip to work so I could just to do it manually.) Your video and the wiki are great, but as soon as they link out to a GitHub it hits this huge wall of assumption that people know how to navigate that site :(

One tip if others are having trouble: I couldn't find the systems folder in my kindle but I learned on the Kindle Modding Discord that when you're in you Kindle root folder, click on the address bar and type in "System" it'll show up. Happy Modding

when I try to copy the .assests folder back into the systems folder it says that I needs 8 mb, however there should be plenty of storage, did they already break this?

if you are trying this and the hotfix isn't working, use the compatibility version

Try factory resetting the thing zing out of all kids things and signing in with an adult account.im pretty sure it forces you into a kids account with initial setup but the if you factory reset it and resign in you can opt out and make it a normal kindle I could be wrong

If you’re on Windows, in File Explorer at the top where it shows your file path, append “/.assets” to the end of the file path.

are you supposed to get the mosquito book? I didn't get that one after clicking on the ads til bang. someone on reddit said it was still jailbroken and to install the hot fix which I did. But now I installed the mrpi and dual and didn't get a new book KUAL. I don't know where it is going wrong
