The Daily Grind - Chaper 269

Nice.  Also I'll be taking next week off to get

Comments

1) Possibly 2) That's still open, and I'll probably come back to it at some point. 3) I actually seriously regret writing the creepy cult, and it might be the one thing I cut from the final edit of "book 5". Just because they don't really make the world feel larger, and it introduces a confusing proper noun into the mix. Having them get murdered by Harlan much later doesn't even have to change, really; that still shows exactly who Harlan is, and the cult is SO irrelevant that it barely even matters. 4) I hadn't even *considered* that, and I was just talking to someone about aphantasia yesterday. That's a really cool idea to bring up, I'm gonna put that in my notes.

So, totally unrelated to this chapter, but I've been re-reading the section of story between Squo 1 and Townton and some some questions came to mind, 3 banal story points and 1 weird magic nonsense, all of which you are free to RAFO: 1. Is Javier, the kid who pointed them to the Sewer going to be relevant again, ever? 2. At one point, they stompend some paper-pushers in a garage, James handed their target a business card-relevant, or lost thread? 3. I still wish we learned more about the creepy priest/cult that Harlan blew up (plus they were the first Chain Breaker reference, though in-context, they seemed to be more referring to Blitzkrieg, but that could be bad intel on their part) 4. I was thinking a lot about the .mem files and if you had pondered at all the implications of memory shares between neurotypical and neurodivergent folks. I ask because I have total aphantasia (complete inability to form mental imagery, and for me that includes all other senses too), and also not much in the way of autobiographical memory (can recall facts about past experiences, but I don't ever remember events and put myself back into the scene, as it were) and I was just thinking how bonkers it would be for people with vastly different memory types to interact with .mems

I agree! Just being able to turn any magic they find into a consistently available option is a qualitative game changer. Hell, even just the fact that it can make more of the stuff they need to make more potions means that it's having a continual amplifying effect on the Order. When I first wrote the duplication ritual, I didn't know what to do with it. Then I was afraid it would make things too weird or different. Then I realized I literally wrote a status quo into the story so I could shoot them, so I did it metaphorically and started making copying stuff into a part of the life of the Order, and I think it's made the story WAY better.

IDK why, but this chapter felt like it was abnormally girthy, which made me a happy man. A massive increase in duplication uses would be a game changer, I think the duplication ritual is probably the most powerful single magic the order has.
