Fire Demon

Maybe you can tell, but this was very much a super relaxing and experimental piece for me. The messier the sketches are, the more I draw just by feeling if that makes sense. I tend to hold the pen super lose and just sketch how I feel. At other times, my sketches are a bit more strategical and thoughtful. This doesn’t mean that one is better or worse than the other, it’s just a matter of how I feel while doing it.
And this feeling continued through the whole drawing process! I had a few problems with accuracy vs style, because I tend to make my Linework super detailed and “anatomically right” meaning, that such big eyes w/o irises or a stubby nose etc. very much goes against everything I usually do. I feel like, the sketch is somewhat better in that aspect too, because it’s abstract, it just fits the whole image more. When you search for references, Dabi is pretty much just black at this state – but making him black or very dark wouldn’t suit my style and colors either – I guess we have to wait for the anime adaptation to see how they do it.
Speaking of colors, that was the main part in this piece. I wanted to experiment with them! First, I had a more pinkish/reddish setup in mind, but because of his blue flames everything turned out quite purplish. There is so much going on with the fire and everything, that you barely see any detail of his face anymore – but I guess that has it’s charm too?
I really don’t know how to feel about this artwork. It was relaxing and rather quick, but it is definitely not my favorite piece I’ve ever done… tell me what you think about it!
