Nebula Photos Sunday Chat #51 Recording

This is the recording for Nebula Photos Sunday Chat #51 that took place yesterday on Sunday, October 5th, 2025.

We now have a place on Discord to continue with these Sunday Chat discussions. Check out the #sunday_chat_discussion channel if you are on the Nebula Photos Discord. As usual, Todd Tucker created a PDF Overview which is now attached. Thank you Todd!

The next Sunday Chat will take place on Sunday, November 2nd 19:00UTC (2pm EST, 7pm UK time, note: daylight savings time ends this day so the UTC/UK time shifts one hour later for the meeting) at this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84911651933?pwd=ffB4GNWxFpkvhoFSc2uEsTEHV4RKiX.1

I'll post a reminder / agenda a few days before, and all Nebula Photos events (online or in-person) are also posted to this calendar: https://www.nebulaphotos.com/patreon-calendar/ as soon as I have confirmed the date.

1) https://discord.gg/nebulaphotos (links aren't clickable in patreon comments, but you should be able to just copy-paste this) 2) Yes, I have looked into this a bit practically, but abandoned the video. Maybe I'll return to it. Assuming equal integration time, there isn't a huge difference visually between stacking longer exposures at gain 0 and shorter exposures at higher gain where the HCG mode kicks in. The read noise is substantially higher at gain 0, but as long as you expose long enough (e.g. 10 minutes), it won't matter. For most people I suggest the shorter exposure / higher gain approach since it gives you more opportunity to throw out bad frames without a substantial hit to integration time. If you are confident you won't have any bad frames (tracking, focus, high clouds, etc.) then there can be an advantage to the gain 0 long subexposure approach as it allows for higher dynamic range so you can, in theory, bring out dimmer details without the brightest parts clipping. There are so many factors to consider for that advantage to matter that I gave up on the video, but maybe I'll get back to it some time.

Off topic, but I have two questions: 1) Can I get a reinvite to the discord? 2) A question I was going to ask on the discord, and might be a good episode, When do I want to muck with camera gain. Find the best gain point on the charts and never adjust it, just change exposure time as needed. I noticed the Player One Poseidon-C boasts extra deep wells, but you can only leverage that at much lower than optimal gain. When would this be an advantage? When would I use that?
